| 322935 | 2005-02-09 07:10:00 | Hey, I'm thinking about installing Gentoo (doing a Stage 3 + GRP installation) on my server box. It already has FC2 installed. A couple of questions 1) Can I leave my /home untouched by the installation? As I don't want any of that data lost - can I just remove Fedora from / and install Gentoo directly to there? 2) I'd want to install vsftpd and dvd::rip. Would that just be as simple as after the installation running = : emerge vsftpd then emerge dvd::rip? 3) Can I save my config files eg my smb.conf and my vsftpd.conf? from fedora and just use these in Gentoo to save a lot of configuration 4) If I create users in Gentoo with home directories that are already under /home will this wipe those directories or not because they're already there. | 322936 | 2005-02-09 07:23:00 | 1. ANS: Yes, just dont re partition/ remake the file system on that partition 2. ANS. Yes. But IIRC dvd:;rip is called dvdrip in portage. 3.ANS Yes. $. ANS No these dir's wont be touched because they are all ready there, But make shure you mount the home partiton to /home. (Some one might want to revise on this one depending on what thing you are going to use for creating users.) |

| 322937 | 2005-02-09 07:43:00 | 1) Is this on a seperate partition? Otherwise its gonna be a bit of a pain rm -rf'ing everything on / _but_ /home. Yeah, you can do it though. Make sure you do this all as soon as its been mounted to /mnt/gentoo (You'll see it in the Hanbook). Make sure this is done before extracting the stage3 tarball. 2) You'd want to make sure the USE flags etc are fine, but yes, thats it. Here's what I get: bash-2.05b$ emerge dvdrip vsftpd -pv These are the packages that I would merge, in order: Calculating dependencies ...done! [ebuild N ] dev-perl/XML-Writer-0.510 17 kB [ebuild NS ] x11-libs/gtkglarea-1.2.3-r1 284 kB [ebuild N ] dev-perl/gtk-perl-0.7008-r11 -gnome +opengl 445 kB [ebuild N ] dev-perl/Test-Harness-2.30 50 kB [ebuild N ] dev-perl/Test-1.24 12 kB [ebuild N ] dev-perl/Event-0.87 238 kB [ebuild N ] media-sound/ogmtools-1.5 +dvd 209 kB [ebuild N ] dev-perl/Storable-2.07-r1 94 kB [ebuild N ] net-analyzer/fping-2.4_beta2-r1 59 kB [ebuild N ] media-video/dvdrip-0.50.18 +cdr -gnome 227 kB [ebuild N ] sys-apps/xinetd-2.3.13 +tcpd 290 kB [ebuild N ] net-ftp/vsftpd-1.2.2 -debug +ipv6 +pam +tcpd 133 kB Total size of downloads: 2,065 kB bash-2.05b$ 3) I would copy /etc/samba/smb.conf to ~/ so it'll be safe :) Not sure about vsftpd - It should though, Im pretty sure its just the position in /etc thats marginally different, but yeah, should be sweet :) 4) I wouldnt have a clue, but why not: mv /home/ash /home/backup useradd ash -m -G users, audio, games, wheel, portage -s /bin/bash cp -Rpuv /home/backup/* /home/ash Just reading thru the man pages for useradd, it would appear as thou the Gentoo one doesnt bother copying anything from /etc/skel unless specified with -k /etc/skel but better safe than sorry right :) Chill. |
