2005-02-11 21:26:00 | I am useing a 256 adsl connection and am happy with it. I was thinking of switching to a 1 or 2 gb connection, but I can't think of any good reason to do so. Basicly all I use the net for is browsing and e-mail etc. I download the odd bit of software and drivers, but nothing major. No music, videos or larg Linux files. My total useage is under 1 gig a month. What advantage is there in getting a faster connection. Most web sites appear almost instantaniously. So how can they work faster? Jack

2005-02-11 22:02:00 | Hi JJJJ. Depends to some degree also on your domestic arrangements - it frees up the telephone. A major brownie point as far as I was concerned. | Scouse (83) | |
2005-02-11 22:08:00 | I agree with Scouse, "it frees up the phone". Apart from which 256 is heaps better than 56 modem. The only downside is the $$$$$. PJ | Poppa John (284) | |

A major brownie point as far as I was concerned. JJJJJ is already on ADSL and just wants to know if he ought to upgrade to turbo. ;) If it costs more I wouldn't bother for the activities that you do. The biggest advantage is in downloading things, not for general web surfing. Graphics intensive and fancy media sites will load a lot quicker but if you don't visit them a lot you'll probably not benefit much from the extra speed. |

2005-02-11 22:26:00 | I agree with topazz (nearly didn't recognise you in that outfit topazz...) In many cases even the page loading speed will be unchanged, due to constraints elsewhere on the internet. Downloading files or attachments will be 4 x quicker, uploading is probably little different (256 is only 128 upstream from memory, and the 1 Mb is 192 upstream) I am on 3 GB at 256k, and use about 1 - 1.3 GB per month. Could live within a 1 GB 1 Mb plan, but would not see any significant gain.
