324187 2005-03-14 09:53:00 Whilst putting together a computer package sounds great, it seems abit more complicated. I've looked at PB Technologies, Quay, QMB and Advanced Computers. I was inclined to go Noel Leemings or similar as they are less likely to fold like some computer businesses have done in the past, leaving their customers pretty much abandoned with warranties that are worthless.

:D

Hmmm....You should most certainly only purchase from an outlet your happy with, If you go the retail chain route we can still give advice as to which system presents best value for money, though a new thread is probally in order.

324189 2005-03-14 10:25:00 Can't believe how long this post is, I jsut read 4 pages :D

For video and photo editing, get the fastest AMD 64 processor you can afford and the 739 socket design with a 739 motherboard on the nVidia nforce 4 chipset . For these big files you def want 1GB or more .

Not sure about the vid card with photo edit not needed at all . For the video editing it may be needed, but I have no exp with video editing . If you one get PCI Express current tech, the nvidia 6600GT seems to be the best buy .

HDD get Serial ATA 150 as this is current technology . ATA has maxed out . All mobo's would have a free SATA controller builtin . Next time when you get the 2nd SATA HDD, you can do RAID which is free on many mobo's . The 2nd generation SATA seems to be available, but not seen in NZ stores yet, the one I know is Hitachi 2nd SATA 300 . There are some 2nd gen SATA mobo's out there .

If you wanna be a real photo nut, get a Epson 2200 A3 printer and a monitor calibrator and a printer calibrator to make your own custom ICC profiles with something like a Gregtagmacbeth Eye One Photo

I am on the same boat, kinda not sure if I want to wait for 2nd gen SATA or just get the 1st gen that is available right now (in NZ) .

Re: graphics applications I believe Macs has it but getting v close . MACs are color profilled managed better than PCs . If you photo edit and upload a pix to the web it would look diff cos IE does not use ICCs . You would then need to proof setup (Photoshop) to correct the colors . IE by itself is duller . While if you right click and open file on Photoshop it looks fine!

If you are a serious photo editor or a video editor with 50MB+ file sizes, dual CPU would be beneficial if you got the money . I love to do this for my photog but each upgrade path is too much, dual CPU mobo and 2 CPUs . . .

Re: CRT monitors yes they are cheaper . But they are old tech . CRT monitors are still better accepted in the graphics community of more consistent colors and if you wish to calibrate your monitor, LCD can be done too but CRT calibrates better . Sizes look for 17" LCD or 19" CRT . I have a 17" CRT and want bigger, with video and photo edit you want higher resolutions . my 17" CRT I used 1280*1024 and I want more but it goes too small on this size .

324190 2005-03-14 10:41:00 The advantage of a video card (in a non-gaming rig) is that it has its own onboard ram rather then taking it away from the system,Plus its access speed is faster, and the graphical quality is better.Plus you would usually get the ability to run 2 displays.

All big positives if one intends to do more then email the relatives.

But a powerful gaming card isn't required unless powerful gaming is on the agenda.

324191 2005-03-14 10:43:00 Have a look at the Sony Artisan 20" CRT (I think) and drool.... it comes with a colorimeter which sticks on screen runs a file and creates you a custom monitor ICC profile so the colors u see is truely correct with no tint or imperfect colors, arguably the best graphics screen.

Each monitor is gonna be diff, a Sony is diff to a HP monitor. Even if you had 10 sample of Sonys each are gonna be slightly diff.... but maybe I am going too far...

Hi Princess
Advanced Computers say that they have been going for seven years now . Apparently they were in Northcote before . George Woods, the Mayor, even seems to give them some endorsement (check that out) because of their involvement with retired people .

Ah! Advertising at its best! Funny how many people it can catch out . Yes, they are involved with SeniorNet -a sponsor I think . And 'support' retired people by giving them 10% off or something when their stuff are marked 10% more than everybody else anyway . George Wood has not endorsed them -they just invited him over for the opening ceremoney -most likely because SeniorNet asked him to . Wood has not done anymore than let them take a photo which they've used a million times to advertise .

I don't intend to be negative . But if you're that curious -why not ring George Wood . His ph . no is quite readily available :D

You could possibly be right there, Techie, but is that informed comment ?

Certainly not my observation . Have you really done any analysis ? Can you quote comparisons - apart from the real cut price on-line stores ?

Certainly not my observation. Have you really done any analysis ? Can you quote comparisons - apart from the real cut price on-line stores ?Well... maybe not the flash drives of the $299+gst 17" LCD they have on special. But anything else.... Just randomly picking from their 'specials' on their home page:
Samsung CD Writer & DVD Combo ROM $106~incl GST. [Others range from $72-$80]
Brother HL1430 $269 [The RRP is only $249!!!.. Warehouse stationary down the road is only $199 incl gst + $99 worth printing software free] -well maybe not worth $99, but still... more for less!

Give a fair idea? How often do you see Advanced Computers high up on a PriceSpy list?

324196 2005-03-24 06:19:00 Hi there you haven"t mentioned any software yet? I know i will get crap from everyone here....but have you considered a MAC comes bundled with a great piece of software called ilife which will do almost every thing you are after.
Now i will sit back and await the attacks!!!!!!
