324137 2005-02-13 02:05:00 i totally disagree with iluvithot, sata provides very minimal speed increases, and is only advisable with a drive that has an 8mb buffer, for just an ordinary home pc, ata133 is fine, to have sata means an sata capable motherboard, a significant price increase. Tux (606)
324138 2005-02-13 02:38:00 I'd suggest calling in to an Apple showroom & having a look at the G5 iMac if you want a stable computer without any windows viruses, spyware etc.
Works well, great for graphics and looks a million dollars too. I'm extremely happy with my eMac but I'd love a new G5 iMac

Sue with her 2.5 year old XP box in bits yet again, this time with a burnt out CPU and still waiting for the rest of the bad news.

324140 2005-02-13 03:10:00 Hi All
I have just come back by the shop. Decided that it is better to get clarification on things by a personal visit than trying by phone.

Re CPU - Metla & Alan's query
It is an Athlon 64bit3200+ (running on a socket 754 and an ASUS motherboard 754).
She said they could give me a 939 motherboard but have found the 754 motherboards more popular.

There's nothing wrong with a 754 m/b,I have one myself, but there's no upgrade path for it. It's reached the end of it's life.
Shops are probably pushing them for that reason.
Take the 939.

That will probably be the next thing to do on his priority list after shaving his legs with a cheese grater and giving himself a battery acid enema ;)

324145 2005-02-13 05:04:00 I thought so . If you are a Senior Citizen (which I think your not) go for it -as they will go to all sorts of things to advertise themselves through SeniorNet . But as for anyone else, they won't want to hear your troubles should you have any .

On the North Shore, I recommend Orange Computers or Playtech -offically called TMC Computers . TMC is a long time reputable retailer and wholesaler . They have started trading as Playtech . Both of these you will see advertisement in the NS Times . Orange Comp . would give you a cheaper deal . Service wise, they're not any worse . On the Shore, I tend to avoid Advanced Comps . and ITServe .

However, I'm sure there are happy Advanced Comps customers around -as with any other shop .

Edit: Actually I've heard Playtech will give you a good deal too if you ask for discounts ;) They are 'wholesalers' themselves so they are able to go a little bit extra if your dealing with the right person .

And they will chuck in free stuff like CD cases, mousepads, etc . kind of stuff after you buy .

Thanks Techie  - I will certainly check them out - though it might not be until next weekend that I can get there . One is in Barry's Point Rd and the other slightly north . Will give you feedback . :2cents:

I think that the Advance Computer crowd are genuine people but they are terrifically busy, which means that you really have to time your visit to ask questions . I think to some degree they have "to fly by the seat of their pants" - a old expression you don't hear much of, but probably gives a very good quick idea !
