324127 2005-02-12 05:11:00 Also .... make sure the hard drive that you get is a SATA (Serial ATA), much quicker access and copy speeds.... also the larger the better! iluvithot (7139)
324128 2005-02-12 06:06:00 "Excellent value for money" - do your refer here to the ATI 9550 or the second system that is outlined - the XP3200 processor etc, etc ?
Misty

The value for money was in reference to the card, and its value for money is obviously dependent on how your vendor sells them for....

As for the system,I would value it at a couple hundred less then their quote.....

324129 2005-02-12 06:52:00 Also be careful how cheap you go, the cheap PC may not be that cheap .... that is you may end up paying extra $$$ to patch it up later. Pay a little extra now to save a lot later.

... i used to work in a business who assembled computers, but will never go back there, customers want heaps for very little $$$ and all the support they can get for free.

paying a $100 or $200 more might not be so bad if they have great backup, phone support or can come to where you live.... and actually want to help.

324130 2005-02-12 06:53:00 An HP Pavillion would be a better proposition. Pentium4 2.8 and a lot of goodies.
Just happens I have one for sale. Two months old. only done two weeks work.

and why would you be wanting to sell it after two weeks of use if it's sooooooo great......

take it from a professional, one of those HP Pav's are nothing but junk, and the goodies they put on those bog the system down .... course you would know that Jack since you are selling it ;-) those are the PC's with the front usb, card readers, firewire right??

HPs in general are a great brand, but if you want to go for a Brand PC, one of their Business series PCs with SATA, which are 915 chipset (dx6100) are far superior!

Firstly I bought it as a fill in when I blew up my other comp. I have since rebuilt the old and better one.
It also supports Sata though it doesn't have a Sata drive at present.
Cost $1500 new.No Monitor. Will take $900.

324134 2005-02-12 11:27:00 Hi
An trying to take on board the suggestions which all sound very useful. How about instead a

AMD Athlon XP3200 Processor 64bit
512MB DDR RAM PC 3200
80GB 7200RPM Harddisk Drive
1.44MB 3.5” Floppy Disk
DVD RW
Geforce FX5700LE AGP8X 256MB, DVI, TV-Out
Integrated Sound
56k INTERNAL v.92 Modem
17” SVGA Colour CRT
Keyboard, Scroll Mouse (both wireless) & Pad, Speakers
Anti-Virus Software (Trial) - useless – will stick with AVG !!
24 months Return-to-Base from invoiced date
M/S Windows Home Edition

for a price of $1730 (GST included)

I checked on the motherboard and it is a DFI KM400 ( could not quite understand what the young Chinese lady said in addition but it sounded like it will do 180P graphics - does that make sense ??)

Re suggestions about a video card - what type please ?

Misty :help:

Hi Misty,

There is still something wrong with this quote,

Either the CPU is an Athlon XP3200 (which is socket A and will run on a KM400 Motherboard) or its an Athlon64bit3200+ (which runs on a Socket 734 or 939 motherboard)

There is no such thing as an Athlon XP3200 64 bit CPU, given the choice you should go with the later model Athlon 64 bit 3200+ CPU.

And make absolutely sure of what you are getting (in writing) before you part with any cash (may also pay to find out what brand and model DVD writer they are using)

The 180P graphics makes no sense to me at all (the only 180P I've heard of is a model of phillips monitor)

Also if you are thinking of video editing, a larger Hard drive would be a wise move (you should be able to upgrade to a 120Gb for around $40.00 extra)

I'm with Metla on choice of graphics card, I think the Radeon 9550 is a better proposition.

Finally once you get a detailed quote, try Paradigm (good pricing & service) or Ascent (dearer but very good reputation & service) online store system builders to compare and see if you are getting a good deal or not.

Hope this is of use
