323769 2005-02-11 02:53:00 I'd like an uninstaller that removes EVERYTHING. Every little trace of a program. Does one exist? KiwiLinc (6595)

323774 2005-02-11 04:12:00 You may get pretty close to what you want with Ashampoo's Uninstaller. It's a little convoluted to use and their new interface is crap but it does the job.

It's based on taking a system snapshot before you install something, then uses that snapshot to restore your system to pre-snapshot condition.

There may be other better apps around.

323775 2005-02-11 04:21:00 Why the obsession with removing everything (which wouldn't be an issue if some programs were designed by sane people)?

I just quickly free up space by trashing entire directory of a game - I can't be bothered running the uninstallers. Hard drives are huge these days.

Tricky to clean something out without taking a snapshot of file state before installing it.

323776 2005-02-11 04:36:00 Everyone to their own thing of course - I like to have a fast, lean registry and I object to poorly coded software that leaves its crap all over the place.

Take AVG antivirus for example. Even Ashampoo does not remove some (about 20) registry keys from the old version. I have to go into the registry and manually set the key's permissions so I can remove them - otherwise the newer AVG version won't install.

What was the problem? - AVG7 install can remove AVG6 .

How does a program that relies on a system snapshot cope with all the other changes that can happen between installing something and removing it?
