324653 2005-02-13 12:10:00 I have tried to download and install a new versioin of MSN but although the download appears to be successful, I keep getting an error message saying the installation has failed, and I should download from the MSN Website. I've done this with the same failed result. Don't know what to do next :help: Please merino (6617)

324655 2005-02-13 22:48:00 I've already been there Chilling.

Like I said in my original post, the error message directed me to the MSN site to download it directly and I DID. It's not the downloading that goes wrong, its the installation afterwards. That is when I get the error message to say that the installation has failed. I have known for ages that there was a beta verison of MSN but I was happy with what I had (6.0). Until today that is. Today when I tried to log on, instead of getting my contact window to open I got a message saying I was unable to log on until I'd downloaded their update. And that is where the problem began.

My msn contacts who were using the same version as me received the same message but have successfully downloaded and installed the update without problem, whereas I'm reduced to using Windows Messenger.

I've done everything I can think of short of formatting and it looks like that is going to have to be my next move unless anyone has got a better suggestion.

I thought that by posting here, there might have been someone else who, faced with the same problem had been able to solve it successfully and pass on some advice.

324657 2005-02-13 23:08:00 Apparently that was also tried. Sorry I didn't mention it before, but it was my son who was working on it and he must have done that when I wasn't looking. He tells me that this produced the same message. merino (6617)
324658 2005-02-13 23:39:00 is anything recorded in the event logs when the installation fails?
if you log on as a different user do you get the same error?

324659 2005-02-13 23:55:00 I'm not sure what event logs are or where to find them. And yes the same error occurs with a different user. And on my son's computer I can log in with my username without any difficulty. There is something on my computer preventing a successful instal. And I'm still clueless. :badpc: merino (6617)
324660 2005-02-14 00:25:00 the event logs can be accessed by opening Event Viewer under Administrative Tools. there will probably be 3 categories, Application, Security, and System. it is Application or System errors that may be relative to the install. One way to check is to right-click the logs & clear them, then run the install and see if any errors are shown. inphinity (7274)
