324390 2005-02-12 05:31:00 Long story short:

There are four routers:

Some other network --> 1 <--> 2 <--> 3 <--> 4 <-- Internet

Router 1 can ping router 2 and 3.
Router 2 can ping router 1, 3 and 4.
Router 3 can ping router 1, 2 and 4.
Router 4 can't ping local addresses, so I haven't a clue.

My issue is that router 1 can't ping router 4. Router 1's default route is set to router 2, so should be forwarding all unkown traffic to router 2 - and router 2's default is router 3, so it should inturn forward that request to router 3, and router 3 is on the same physical network as router 4, so there shouldn't be a problem there.

Router 4 has a static entry for router 1's and 2's subnet, although because I cannot set gateways out of physically attached networks, I cannot set the gateway for router 1's subnet to router 2.

I cannot set a default gateway, like I have on the other routers, because that would override the whole go-to-the-internet thing.

This is understandably hard to follow, but in my experience explaining a routing scenario is never easy.

If you do follow, is there anything I could be doing wrong? From router 4, could a static route to router 1's subnet, using router 3 as a gateway (which also has a static route to router 1's subnet) not work? Surely it could!

Curses!
