324478 2005-02-14 07:40:00 Thanks everyone for voting and your comments. Originally when I started this thread I was going to pose the question : "should I turn off my router...?" and at the last minute thought I would change it into a poll - so my apologies if this was in the wrong forum. My original concern was DNS attacks etc and preserving the data cap, per BigJohn's post, but it appears most people are not too concerned about that. However, I like the idea of an electrical auto-timer where the router is timed to come on at say 6.30am and turns off automatically at say midnight - too easy! :D

Most modems/routers have this feature built in (the good ones anyway). You can set the times in the router and it will take the line down at a certain time and then back on at a certain time. You should also be able to set it to turn off after so many minutes of no activity and then connect on demand. I find that this does not work reliably though. I don't use the builtin timer because sometimes when I go to work I just leave it on. Just like tonight. I am over my cap and have been cut back to 64/64 (hit at 13GB) so it stays on nearly all the time now.
