325167 2005-02-18 04:39:00 It is up to you whether you wish to have someone format your computer for you if you don't feel confident in doing the job because it can be rather daunting for the first time, especially when you might have difficulty getting access to PF1 for help when you are not sure of something . It isn't as bad as it seems, however, and as you appear to know your way around your computer quite well you should not really have any problems .

There are lots of websites that provide instructions for formatting and reinstalling Windows but it would help a lot to know a bit more about your computer . Is it a "name brand", eg Dell, Compaq, Packard Bell or anything like that or did you purchase from a specialist computer shop?

Do you have a Windows XP CD and another CD that has "Mainboard", "Motherboard" or some other such title? What discs/CDs came with your computer (apart from program discs such as Office, etc)?

The answer to those questions is rather important .

Also, what is your location, eg Auckland?

My computer is a PC Company bought around 2002 from the PC Company.
I have a so called 'Product recovery CD-Rom
It has the following files/folders on it: DOCS;I386;SUPPORT;VALUEADD;AUTORUN;README;SETUP;WI N51;WIN51IC
The computer also came with another disc called Mainboard which has logos of: PC-Cillin;PCDJ;Adobe;Language Genius;Recovery Genius;CD Ghost on it.
All the other discs that came with the machine relate to programs such as MS Works; Sound Blaster live!;ATI Raddeon;Microsoft Plus!;PrimoCD Plus CD Mastering and Duplication;Upgrade Kit XP Support
I am located fairly close to Warkworth about one hour North of Auckland.
Naturally I would be happy to supply any further details that you may want.
Thanks for your help.

325169 2005-02-18 07:30:00 OK, well you won't be able to find detailed step by step instructions on the internet for reformatting and reinstalling Windows on that computer as it comes with a "Recovery CD" but someone will be able to provide general instructions if you want them . I have not reformatted a PC Company computer myself so I will be unable to help, unfortunately, but there are plenty of people here who have .

Just to be sure that you understand what reformatting means rather than take it for granted that you do, it wipes all the data from your hard drive and provides a clean slate for reinstalling Windows, your programs and data . It also means reapplying all the Windows updates, including SP2 .

I don't want to put you off but it does seem a rather drastic step to take just to be able to send pictures to Outlook Express with one click and there is no guarantee that it will work afterwards . It should work but there is a chance that what broke it previously may once again break it after the reformat and reinstall of all your programs .

If you still want to go ahead with a reformat and wish to do it yourself I suggest that you start a new thread asking for step by step instructions on how to do so, giving the information that you have provided in your previous thread . :)

325170 2005-02-18 08:21:00 As FoxyMX says, "I don't want to put you off but it does seem a rather drastic step to take just to be able to send pictures to Outlook Express with one click." Can you go to your friend's PC and check through very carefully exactly what settings etc s/he has. You have no means of knowing right now whether reformat will fix a problem of unknown cause - better that this dialogue continues.
Foxy also says "Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any solution to help as other posts with the same issue on other forums frequented by very experienced techs have been left unanswered." Pointers to these forums, pse - we might all learn.

325171 2005-02-18 09:30:00 Have you tried this .
Turning On and Off the Image Toolbar
The Image toolbar is turned on by default . When you point to a picture that meets the Image toolbar criteria, the toolbar appears automatically .

You can turn on and off the Image toolbar by using the Internet Options dialog box or by using a shortcut menu that appears when you right-click the toolbar . This menu enables you to turn off the Image toolbar for the current session only or for all sessions . Even after you turn off the Image Toolbar, you can still right-click a picture to use the corresponding commands .

To turn on and off the Image toolbar by using Internet Options

1 .
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options .

2 .
Click the Advanced tab, and then scroll down to the Multimedia area .

3 .
Select or clear the Enable Image Toolbar (requires restart) check box .

Thanks for your level headedness . Perhaps I am getting a bit carried away with this especially since as you point out, what ever broke it in the first case may break it again even after a reformat .
What is so maddeningly frustrating is that it seems such a simple thing to do especially since Outlook Express seems to be working normally as do the rest of my programs I should be able to fix the whole issue .
Thanks very much for your advice I guess I'll just have to live with the situation as it is .

TonyF:

That's a good suggestion which I will do as soon as I can .

325173 2005-02-18 21:48:00 Give another email client and browser a go, Firefox and Thunderbird, Mozilla suit or Opera come to mind, whatever you use would need to be set to default . It may or may not work, IE & OE have deep claws in Windows and how other programmes interact .

You could try an XP Repair specific to IE (roll IE back to original then update it from MS)using the Recovery/software CD . If you can access the CD, it would be pretty tedious as you would need to do the Repair manually rather than let the Windows utility do it automatically from the CD . Having said that the i386 folder contains the update info to prevent it being over written, but I'm not sure how much you can trust it .

Firefox is already my default browser .

I have been using this with OE but I am very happy to give Thunderbird a try .

I am not too sure I have the technical knowledge to manage the XP Repair specific that you mention but I did do a regular and automatic XP repair which failed to fix the problem .

In addition, on advice from this forum, I successfully ran 'sfc /scannow' after copying the folder I386 to the hard drive and editing the registry sourcePath to recognize it . Unfortunately this failed to resolve the issue as well .

Cicero:

according to the article that you suggested:

"It's my site so now I get to tell you how I'd deal with this situation . Really, neither of the methods above that Microsoft recommends are bad, but my approach would be to first run the System File Checker from Method I, but stop short of doing any of the upgrade, repair, or reinstall options . If that didn't solve the problem, I'd go to Method II and reinstall IE6 and OE6 . If that still didn't solve the problem I'd head back to Method I and do a complete reinstall of XP . It's still my contention that piling fixes and repairs onto a damaged operating system is just postponing the inevitable reformat . "

Since I believe I have already run the System file checker with sfc /scannow with no improvement, presumably the next step is to reinstall IE6 and OE6 .
In that regard I am at present studying an article on how to backup and edit the registry .

Sadly I am a neophyte at all this .

Success at last!!!!
I took your suggestion to try Thunderbird as my default e-mail client, and Viola' the resizing works perfectly as it should in one step and automatically.
Time to farewell MS OE and I can't really say I'm all that sorry.
Many thanks to all the people who doggedly kept up with the suggestions, they were very much appreciated!
