www.dimension.net.nz may help

BTW - xorg.conf goes in /etc/X11/

Start: emerge firefox
Hit Ctrl + C to cancel it mid-way through
You can then later type (Unless you emerge something else or reboot);
emerge --resume

And it'll carry on where it left off :)

324958 2005-02-15 21:24:00 Thanks Jen,
That link worked well; I've got X running, got twm (yuk), but it all looks good.

Now another challenge, I want to get kde up and running. I emerged it a couple of days ago, I guess there's a process much like what I've just been through with X11 to get it working.

324959 2005-02-15 21:30:00 Just found the KDE How to. I'll give that a go  jcr1 (893)
324960 2005-02-15 22:10:00 I've got KDE working (this is coming via Konqueror on my new Gentoo installation).
Bit of flicker on the screen that I'll have to do something about; but by & large it's starting to look useful.

324961 2005-02-16 02:02:00 Now I've got Firefox installed (its what I'm using to post this).
Its getting more useful all the time.
I've yet to get the middle scrolling button on the mouse working.
Configure sound (I see there's a good Howto for this on the Gentoo site).
Set up the printer (Epson Stylus Photo R210).
Ditto the scanner & digital camera....etc etc.

There's no doubt about it; the instructions for Gentoo are very, very good.

Special thanks to Jen & Chill for getting me this far.

All the best to you Murray P for your attempt at Gentoo. What better way to learn about Linux?

324962 2005-02-16 04:11:00 Good to see you making progress jcr1 :)

I found the really magically part of building an OS from ground up, was having a desktop load for the first time - it made it *look* more real, and as if I had really achieved something. It was on a par with building your first computer and the first time it boots up :D

Your flickering monitor and lack of scroll mouse can be sorted out in your xorg.conf. For the monitor, go to the Section "Monitor" part, and make sure you have the HorizSync and VertRefresh rates correct according to your monitor specifications - as root, just change those figures to suit. Then have a look under the KDE control panel > Peripherals > Display to make sure your refresh rate is correct (you might have to check this after restarting X so that the new HorizSync and VertRefresh rates are being used).

For the scroll mouse, are you using a USB or PS2 mouse? This is what I have for my PS2 mouse which should work for you:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
You will need to completely restart X for it to read the new settings.

KDE should have packages for the digicam/scanner, but if not, just find out what you need and then "emerge" it!

Having such a bare basics setup is great, it means you can pick and choose exactly what you want on your system. If you haven't sorted out a CD/DVD burner application yet, emerge k3b - it is excellent :)

324963 2005-02-16 05:53:00 Jen,
That worked a treat for the mouse (Ps2) .

According to the specs that came with my monitor, xorg . conf is correct;
following is the settings; can you see anything dodgy about it?

Section "Monitor"
#DisplaySize 320 240 # mm
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "CPQ"
ModelName "COMPAQ MV740"
HorizSync 30 . 0 - 70 . 0
VertRefresh 50 . 0 - 120 . 0
Option "DPMS"

324964 2005-02-16 06:02:00 Got it

Display in KDE did the job .

Sometimes I'm a bit quick on the draw .

324965 2005-02-16 08:28:00 I'm a bit lost with getting the sound to work .

I've used the Alsa Howto on the Gentoo site and unmuted as per the instructions .

But it doesn't want to work .

Can you tell me what your experiences were with setting up sound; Jen or Chill?

324966 2005-02-16 09:00:00 Can you tell me what your experiences were with setting up sound; Jen or Chill?I had a bit of fun with my sound, but this was due to my now almost compulsive behaviour of leaving out all support for my sound in the kernels I build

Did you build your own kernel from scratch, or use genkernel? Is it onboard or a sound card? Have you looked to see if the sound modules are loading with lsmod?
