325269 2005-02-15 07:59:00 Hey! I am wanting to re format my computer, but i am wanting to save all the programs that i have installed... i have got a program that backs up all the drivers that the system is using called Driver Genius, but is there another program that backs up all the PROGRAMS that you are using as well? Backed up as good as new... so that when i have finished installing the new operating system, i can put the programs all back on!
Thanks!

325270 2005-02-15 08:20:00 I have never heard of such a piece of software - but if it existed I would not use it! In any Windows system over time the registry gets "bloated". By using a system like this you would be adding the old bloated registry back to a new system negating at least part of the reason for doing the format in the first place! johnd (85)
325271 2005-02-15 09:07:00 It is called a drive imaging program e.g. Norton's Ghost.

If you have games you can usually get away with backing up the folder in is installed in. The problem with windows programs is that they tend to stick files anywhere and make use of any number of registry entries etc

The best you may hope for is to use whatever apps own function for backing up preferences and having a copy of its installer handy.

With XP you can also have a look at the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (which does many MS apps)..

gibler -- maybe? The way I read the post was that a clean install of Windows was required then a simple way of putting the apps back without reinstalling??

But to install I use this (www.microsoft.com) just make sure you get the correct version for your OS.
