325009 2005-02-14 11:02:00 I have got a 40gb laptop hard drive which contains a whole heap of photo's which i scanned onto the drive before it decided to die on me. I am wanting to know if anyone has any ideas that i could possibly use to restore these photos. I have brought a 2.5" drive enclosure and have mounted the drive into that.

I was using Windows XP on this machine.

When i try and load up My Computer it takes about 5mins before i can actually see the drive however when i double click the drive it just reads the hard drive before failing with an error message "Incorrect paramters"

I would really appreciate if anyone has any ideas as i scanned 180 photo's which took me 4.5 hours to do.

Thanks in advance.

325010 2005-02-14 11:16:00 Unfortunately it sounds like toast. There are more knowledgeble people on harddrive failures on the forum and they may suggest something.
One thing that i tried in a similar situation was an old standby. I placed the drive into two ziplock plastic bags removed the air and put in the freezer overnight. Next day pulled it out, dried off the little condensation there was real fast and installed it quickly a and managed to do a successful ghost of it. Before this ghost was unable to even recognise the drive.
But its pretty much a last resort cause I'm desperate stuff.
There are heaps of article on how and why this MAY work available on the web.

325011 2005-02-14 11:20:00 Thanks Highlander, yeah i am really hoping that somebody will be able to help here as i scanned 181 photo's to be exact!!!!! Took me 4.5hrs to do ahhhh!!!!

I have heard of that trick before actually, putting the drive into the freezer but yes i will do that on a last resort.

Fingers crossed somebody can provide some help to retrieve these photo's.

Thanks again.

325013 2005-02-14 12:02:00 Sorry it looks as if you will have to register, wasn't so when I got this file. If you wish I could send the file via your email. Post back, if you want me to do that. zqwerty (97)
325014 2005-02-14 12:02:00 Depending on the condition of the drive, the data could be retrieved by data retrieval software or by a specialist data recovery firm (data forensics). It depends how important the data is to you, the latter option will cost plenty while it is more likely to succeed than the software way (no guarantees). The more you try to fiddle with the drive the less chance of a successfull retrieval.

I'm not sure if it is all that serious though, if you can access it at all there is hope. Maybe you should try not to touch and wait for/seek out more advice.

Edit: Or PM Z so you don't splash you addy all over the net

325015 2005-02-14 18:11:00 Is it the drive that failed? It could be the external enclosure. PaulD (232)
325016 2005-02-14 19:22:00 I'd say you're going to need a new drive regardless, so you could try:

Buy a new drive, place the old drive as primary slave, install new drive and boot from Windows CD and install Windows on the new drive.

Then using Windows Explorer see if you can copy the images across from old drive to new drive.

325017 2005-02-14 19:48:00 It's a laptop sized drive so it would need an adapter cable to fit a PC IDE connection. PaulD (232)

Doh - didn't read properly. Perhaps a second machine could be borrowed and connected via temporary network?
