325757 2005-02-16 23:27:00 I find it easier to think about one problem at a time so I've created two threads. I'll repeat some basic info.

At work we have two computers used for word processing. One uses Word 97 and the other (the main PC) Word 2000. Suprisingly this hasn't caused any obvious problems over the past two years. These machines are networked so the everything typed on the Compaq Deskpro (700mhz, 256mb RAM) is written to the HP D530 (2ghz, 512mb RAM).

XP Pro on both. SP2 on the HP.

Problem 2: When we go File - Open - Deeds, only documents in alphabetical order up to SH..... show up. But we know there are plenty right down to XYZ. "Letters" and other files seem to go A - Z.

A search of Deeds will find the missing document but that requires human memory as to what it was saved as. There might be a dozen documents for Zyzykoff but only one will show in the Word search so we have to try and remember the whole name to get the correct doc.

Explorer will find documents but that is a clumsy way of wordprocessing when Word used to faithfull provide all the info.

I cannot explain the reason for your problem. However, nine times out of ten I always open my documents from Explorer. To me it is a lot easier to see all the files listed down the page within their folders. I can also sort them by date and alphabetical order depending on what I am looking for. To me it is a lot faster that way. I only use the File dropdown window within Word when it is a file I use all the time and it is listed there.

325759 2005-02-17 01:55:00 There will be a defined limit to the number of files that will display within the Open dialogue box I suspect.

There are other limits within MS Office on lists, so would not doubt that there could also be a limit on this.

How many files are in the directory as a matter of interest?

325760 2005-02-17 02:43:00 Hi Winston. Following on from GF's words.... I have several folders with about 200 files in each and they run okay. As a quick and dirty, subject to specialist advice, I would create two Deeds folders, perhaps Deeds A S and Deeds T Z and use Explorer to drag the T-Z group across in to the new folder. Or even just create one new folder Deeds T Z and rename the original........ :p Scouse (83)
325761 2005-02-17 03:06:00 Thanks Oxie and GF. I take the point about Explorer - I'll have to train our lovely secretaries if necessary, but it didn't used to be a problem.

GF. I thought of a file limit but cannot find where to check or change this. "Deeds" contains 10.3mb of data and 317 files. Hardly worth talking about. :D

325762 2005-02-17 03:08:00 Wotcher Scouse. That is a quick and simple idea. I'll suck it and see. Thanks. :) Winston001 (3612)
325763 2005-02-17 03:57:00 If there is a limit you will not be reaching it with 300 odd files, have just tried a directory here with 2,800 and it displays fine (Word 2003 though).

I would suggest that the point it stops at is perhaps a corrupted file or filename, and it just gives up.
