| 325749 | 2005-02-16 23:15:00 | Problem 1: Anyone here expert in Word and networking? At work we have two computers used for word processing. One uses Word 97 and the other (the main PC) Word 2000. Suprisingly this hasn't caused any obvious problems over the past two years. These machines are networked so the everything typed on the Compaq Deskpro (700mhz, 256mb RAM) is written to the HP D530 (2ghz, 512mb RAM). XP Pro on both. On the Compaq, in Word, File - Open can take up to a minute sometimes. But not always. A 5 sec delay is usual and seems a long time. Sometimes it is nearly instant. Why? There doesn't seem to be any correlation between work being done on the HP, thus delaying the Compaq request. In fact this can happen when the HP is lying idle. Is AVG scanning the files as they come across? But why only sometimes? Yours Deeply Puzzled Mother-of-Ten |

| 325750 | 2005-02-17 02:02:00 | Dear Deeply Puzzled Mother-of-Ten Think also of firewalls, as well as AVG. When transferring a file at this location, I have seen similar delays, and it has been related to the firewall. Strangely it allows it, but thinks about it a long time.... |

Also turn off the fast save and fast find features of Word/Office. there is a ms kb article here (support.microsoft.com) about network collisions. You could also make use of an lmhosts file if you have static ip addresses see lmhosts (saturn.med.nyu.edu) |

| 325753 | 2005-02-17 07:02:00 | Most interesting Gibler and thankyou . I'll look at the tweak tomorrow . I ran Fastfind in Windows this afternoon and things got a whole lot worse . In fact, I haven't been able to get the Windows search function to open at all . Word search still seems to work . I think I've turned Fastfind off but no difference . In fact I couldn't even get System Restore to load so I turned the damned computer off and went home . :mad: |
