325717 2005-02-16 21:16:00 I have looked on Google but, so far, the install instructions all presume
I've got my CDROM going...I have not...
The machine is a "Discovery 580"; MMX-Pentium; 233MHz; 32MB RAM.
I have partitioned/formatted the 4.126 GB HDD with "FDisk" into 2 x 2.063 GB
FAT32 Drives : "C:" & "D:". I presume that the (Pioneer) CDROM will end up
being "E:" drive...I have a driver for the CDROM but I am puzzled as to
where I should put it (& what files should reference to it & how) to make
it work?
If anyone can give me detailed instructions - or maybe a link to them on the
web, I would be extremely grateful....(I have been battling-away at this for
some time now & I am tired of getting nowhere...I just want to get to the
stage where I can load the Win95 disk in the CDROM & do an install).
Thankyou in anticipation of a positive reply - NuB... :confused:

325718 2005-02-16 21:48:00 Is the cd rom driver disk bootable?? Just go into the BIOS and change the bootdisk to floppy, save settings, reboot.

Chuck the driver disk in, if bootable, it MIGHT install the drivers for the CD??

If the floppy does boot into DOS, type dir to see whats on it. If there's an install/setup command on the floppy, run it in DOS. See if it installs the drivers.

If it does, let it do its thing, then change the BIOS to CD to boot from. See what happens. The cd, might be bootable, and if the driver part worked, it SHOULD install Win 95. (Or if the drivers do work, reboot, and if it is working, type E: at a DOS prompt, see if u get the cd. If u do, type dir to see whats on the CD. If u see setup, or install on the CD, run it, see if 95 installs).

Or if there's an option in the BIOS to boot from CD, change it to CD. Save the settings, and reboot. See if it does anything, once the cd rom is in, and whether it installs Win95, without the drivers.

325719 2005-02-16 21:55:00 Don't think the Win95 CD's are bootable.

Go here (www.bootdisk.com) and download the Windows 95 Version B boot disk.
It will make a boot disk for you and load the CD-ROM drivers and it will make the CD-ROM drive letter R:.

325720 2005-02-16 22:00:00 The floppy should be bootable tho. If it is, all he has to do is, boot from floppy (change it to floppy in the BIOS), let it boot to DOS, and type setup or install whetever is on the disk. To install the cd drivers.

Then reboot, and if the drivers are installed, it MAY show the info to do with the cd rom driver and the CD. Then all he has to type is E: at a DOS prompt, and hopefully it picks up the CD.

Thats when u either type install or setup, whatever it is on the 95 cd to install 95 onto the hdd.

325721 2005-02-16 23:21:00 Sounds like you need to find the chipset driver so it will pick up the CD-ROM. THe recovery disks should have it (if you have them) or try downloading the Intel 443BX chipset driver and giving that a go. wintertide (1306)
325722 2005-02-16 23:57:00 Gosh peoples memories are short :eek:

1 . Windows 95 CDs are not bootable as already mentioned by cyabro .
2 . Nothing to do with chipset drivers .

If the cdrom driver disk is not bootable, then you need to add these lines to the win95 boot floppy that I assume has been used to partition and format the hard drive . Lets assume the cdrom driver is called cdrom . sys, then the autoexec . bat file should have this line:

mscdex . exe /D:MSCD000

and the config . sys file should read:

DEVICE=HIMEM . SYS
DOS=HIGH, UMB
device=cdrom . sys /D:MSCD000

You need to ensure that himem . sys and mscdex . exe programs are on the boot floppy .

Then when you boot from the win95 boot floppy your cdrom drive will work .

However as Cyabro said, it is much easier to go and download a boot disk with cdrom support . It can also be a win98 one it doesnt need to be win95 .

325723 2005-02-17 00:11:00 When I install Windows 95, I use the standard Windows 98 Bootdisk to boot then slap in the Windows 95 CD-ROM. Works a charm everytime...until driver detection :) pmchapman (2942)
325724 2005-02-17 00:27:00 And of course, the first thing to do is to make a directory called "WIN95" on the hard disk and copy all the contents of the CD WIN95 directory to it. You then install from that. It saves lots of time in the future. Graham L (2)

:help: Dear Terry et al,
Thankyou all for your suggestions but I am still nowhere ahead . . .
. . . . I tried Your suggestion Terry & "Cyyabro's" but neither werked .
On your one Terry I ran the boot floppy but got "File not found" . & "Drive E: Driver MSCD000 unit 0" ????
Thanks Cyabro for the link - I downloaded the Boot file & opened it & copied them to the floppy & edited the "Autoexec . bat" & "Config . sys" files to change "banana" to the name of the CDROM driver - (Atapi_cd . sys), but when I ran it I got: "Illegal Option Usage: MSCDEX [/E/K/S/V] [/D:<driver> . . . ] [/L:<letter>] [/M:<buffers>] . I then tried each of /E/K/S/V but I kept on getting "File not found" "Illegal Option" .
I do not know what to try next? . . . :badpc:
Any ideas anyone? - t . a . in anticipation . . . . NuB .

325726 2005-02-18 18:46:00 NEVER MIND all that carryon.....do what someone else suggested just goto www.bootdisk.com and download a win98 floppy boot file. have a blank floppy ready and double clik the file you've downloaded it'll write to the floppy then stuff the floppy in the drive on yoru 95 machine and start her up.....you'll get a small menu take the 'start with cdrom support' item and you'll be away laughing..... that's the most ridiculously easy method drcspy (146)
