| 325641 | 2005-02-16 11:31:00 | I have recently done a clean install of Windows XP SP2 (I used to run 98) and find that when I play DVDs, the audio becomes choppy. DVDs used to run perfectly in 98. I have already run the DVD Troubleshooter in Help and it fixed a fair chunk of the choppyness, but it is still there after I play the DVD for a minute. I have tried PowerDVD 6, Nero Showtime 2 and Windows Media Player 10, and they all produce the same result. Windows Media Player is using the PowerDVD Codec. My hardware is a 1Ghz Celeron, 256MB Memory, SiS Xabre Graphics and a Creative PCI Soundcard. I have enabled DMA and downloaded the latest drivers for graphics, sound and the motherboard. If anyone could help me, that would be great. Peter |

| 325643 | 2005-02-16 13:28:00 | Yes I have DirectX 9. All of the latest Windows Updates have been applied too. The motherboard is a Transcend TS-AVE3/B with a VIA Apollo Pro 133A Chipset. The CPU is a 1Ghz Socket 370 Celeron. I can't think of any other specifications. The onboard AC-97 has always been disabled (DVDs ran fine on 98 when it was disabled), because it didn't provide enough amplification for my headphones unlike the Creative AudioPCI ES1371 I use. | pmchapman (2942) | ||
| 325644 | 2005-02-16 15:00:00 | SP2, itself, can cause all sorts of problems.... hardware and software can stop functioning with no appparent reason, seen alot of it about. if possible try it without the SP2 patch may yield further insight into the issue. |

| 325646 | 2005-02-16 20:35:00 | My hardware is a 1Ghz Celeron, 256MB Memory As Ninja says, RAM could be the culprit. 256MB isn't much for XP - I'd run at least 512MB. |

| 325648 | 2005-02-17 00:06:00 | I have just borrowed 256MB from a flatmates machine and it didnt make much difference. I also tried changing the PCI Bus BIOS settings around (different combinations) and then reinstalling the drivers after each combinations. Turning off all Fast R-W turnaround and shadowing, etc reduced even more of the choppyness, but it is still there after 1 minute then progressively gets worse until what seems like a frame a second playback. I tried several DVDs and it all happens at precisely the same point in time for each DVD, no matter what chapter on that DVD is selected. Back to the 256MB memory, Windows reports 190532MB free (with all the background stuff running like MSN and AntiVirus running). I have also tried turning off all of that stuff (through Services Administrator Tool and Manual Exit), but it has not done anything. |

| 325650 | 2005-02-17 00:52:00 | I have tried setting it to both 256MB (what it always was) and 128MB. I remember being told once any less is very bad. I have also checked and the BIOS version is the latest. Also, the DVD/CDRW drive is on the primary cable by itself, while the hard disk is on the secondary cable by itself. Both are set to master on their own cables. |
