| 325571 | 2005-02-16 08:35:00 | evening all, im looking for a laptop so i need a bit of help choosing the right one.should i go intel or swap over to amd???(lets be serious :)). i would like to keep this cheap as possible so i have made a budget of about $1500-$1800 becuase i have to pay for it my self.:) do you think i can get anything reasonable for that amount? are those centrinos any good compared to the p4 or an amd model? i see that they have a low ghz rating does this mean they are alot slower? they are pretty expensive though im going to use it for browsing internet, word processing and school stuff so no games. ive got uni next year so its got to last in terms of speed and the abbility to handle applications in the future, but im unsure what programs i will be using next year, ill most likey be doin a Bcom so here is what im thinking: atleast a 2.8Ghz cpu 512ram 40gb (bigger would be good but depends on price) cdwriter pcmia slot does anyone know any laptops that have that sort of specs? what do you guys think about this (dellstore02.dell.com.au) one, its a Dell Inspiron(TM) 1150 N2800GT Notebook. is laptop ram very expensive? do you think i might aswell get a laptop that already has 512mb in it and not bother about buying seperate sticks of ram? what about HDD's do they fail alot on laptops? how much space do you think i need, is 40gb enough? i really have no idea. what brands should i stay away from? what sort of laptop do you have? is it any good? do you recommend it? do you think i should wait because there could be a big price drops soon? i would like to get it in the next 2-3 months. i would prefer to buy it new and buy it in person ie from a local shop. thanks for the help in advance |

| 325572 | 2005-02-16 09:49:00 | hey prescott . the amd and pentium range unless they say mobile are built with desktop processors . if possible look for a celeron mobile or pentium mobile or even athlon mobile . centrino is the combination of the intel wireless mini pci card and a pentium mobile processor . the normal desktop based ones produce alot of heat . also, a 1 . 7-1 . 8ghz pentium m is equivelant to a full blown 2 . 8ghz p4 . laptop hdds dont fail that often, and 40gb is about standard these days . although a new hdd from say flashcards . co . nz is about $200-300 for an 80gb . laptops use sodimm ram and its not too bad, check pricespy or flashcards . yes it is a lot more expensive than normal ram . good brands, acer, asus, hp and compaq are alright, ibm, toshiba, i tend to stay from less known brands becuase of reliability and availablity of price . personally i would say, why get a laptop . if you are going to otago, they have a massive it infrastructure . a desktop in the halls of residence and say a massive usb 2 . 0 memory stick would be what i suggest . |
