325671 2006-12-24 09:53:00 Hi, this is my first post on this forum. I came across this thread while trying to find a fix for the exact same problem. In my case the laptop was a 1.1Ghz Toshiba PIIIe with 512 Mb RAM. running XP. I spent days trying to get rid of the choppy DVD playback (video and audio). I tried re-formatting the hard drive and re-installing the OS. Twice. Installed latest BIOS revisions. Tried an external DVD drive, tried every player I could think of (including VLC and PowerDVD), tried setting DMA channel on/off. Nothing worked. In my case, the CPU also goes to 100% soon after I start playing any DVD. I ran AIDA32 forthe the memory speed test and my laptop comes up near the bottom of the list (130-300 Mb/s). This seems to indicate the problem is related to a choked-up CPU or slow/defective memory chips. I pretty well gave on trying to fix the problem. stepd (7341)
325672 2006-12-24 10:28:00 Hmm - a bit unconventional on the drive cabling, Windows usually likes to be on C:, and the allocation tries to make the first partition on the master drive C:, the first partition on the second drive D: etc. maybe if you switch the cables and try again it could help. 325673 2006-12-24 14:05:00 havent seen ffdshow filter mentioned yet as being tried!

I used to have a celeron 466 system that ran choppy dvd playback and as soon as i installed ffdshow filter, the choppiness went

325674 2006-12-24 14:40:00 I tried installing the ffdshow filter and couldn't get VLC or WMP to recognize it. I got it working on WMP Classic but the DVD player terribly. stepd (7341)
325675 2006-12-24 14:44:00 DVD player works now!!! After reading a little bit about how DMA channels work I discovered that DMA doesn't work on virtual memory. So I went to the place where you can set virtual memory: Start menu, right-click on My Computer and tab to: Advanced Settings, select "Settings" under Perfomance and tab to: Advanced, select "Change" under Virtual Memory, select "No paging file" then hit "Set". Then you need to reboot computer.
That did the trick for me. Thanx to everyone for all your suggestions. Special thanks to OriginalGnome over at PCWorld forums in New Zealand who clued me in to re-checking the DMA issue very very carefully.

325676 2006-12-25 20:46:00 Playback of VOB files from a DVD on a 466Mhz should be possible. In PowerDVD3 it advertises that you need a 300Mhz. Things have got progressively worse in terms of software using up more CPU usage. On my dads 700Mhz WinXP laptop with 386MB Ram, it'd run absolutely fine with PowerDVD3 -> 5, but 6+ wouldnt work... nor would Nero Showtime etc.

Just chuckin in my 2c worth for next time ;-)
