325812 2005-02-20 05:01:00 The modem is ' XH1154 DSE Modem 56k -PCI Int HaM V2'. I tried using the AT+MS=v90 string, but doesn't improve anything. Tries downloading an updated driver, but it says I've already got it. I'll try moving the computer closer to the jack, ie without the extension cord. That'll be a mission. All the wire, etc are behind desk, etc !! Any other ideas?

Try +MS=V34 you don't need the AT part.

325813 2005-02-20 05:41:00 set it up on the ground next to the jack, its just for testing purposes. have you tried a different isp (a mates perhaps?) have you ran windows update?

i still wonder why the laptop works perfectly but the pc doesnt, try a friends pc at your place too. do you live in the city or are you rural?

ive got the same modem as you have btw and also seems well (touch wood :))

325814 2005-02-21 23:48:00 tried the +MS=V34 string. It slowed down the modem, but didn't solve the disconnect problem. Plugged in the phone, and I can't hear any line noise.
Could it be a software problem? (don't know much about these things)

325815 2005-03-08 09:50:00 modem is still get disconnected. tried moving the pc next to the original telephone port. same thing. what would happen if i tried reformatting? i know - a bit drastic, but it's driving me nuts!!

would that help? if so, how do i go about it?

325816 2005-03-08 10:08:00 I had a problem a long time ago where I was disconnecting intermittently from either Ihug or Xtra.
They came back to me and asked if I had call waiting (or one of those services) on the line coz that will sometimes disconnect someone.
Back then there was a number you put in front of your ordinary dialup number to stop it happening.
Sorry I can't be more specific - but it happened 2 or 3 years ago, and I have changed ISP's since... not becoz of that prob either
Maybe this might help

Tthis going to sound silly but try it
Put two commas after your isp number xxxxxxx,, yep just like that. This allows your isp's modem more time to get the handshaking process going between your modem and thiers, hopefully giving a more relaible connection. Put very simply the two ,, pauses (for a very short period of time) your modem after dailing the isp number.
Do you use call waiting or have sky (on the same phone line)
if you do have call waiting disable it by putting in before your isp number *52.
Also read what Dick Smiths site say about the V92 standard and New Zealand telephone exchanges.
One last thought are you on a budget plan with your isp ? they may have reserved the right to cut you off after certain period of time read your conditions of use.

325818 2005-03-08 10:30:00 Thanks. I don't have call waiting or Sky. I've already tried the two commas, but doesn't make any difference. Must have re connected about 30 times tonight!! I'm with slingshot with the unlimited plan. There must be someone else that has the same problems?? Will try reading dick smith's site for something on v92. but already tried the v90 string. again, no difference. this modem is a new one as i had the same problems with my old one. doesn't seem to be the modem though. beanie (7346)
325819 2005-03-08 10:44:00 try disconecting one at a time any other telephonic devices that maybe sharing the phone in your house if it makes a difference it could be one of two things faulty device or too many devices on the same line beama (111)
325820 2005-03-08 18:31:00 I've tried disconnecting everything from the line, which is only another phone. I've listened on the line and there is no noise. Has anyone experienced any issues with the software that would cause this? Sometimes I can stay on for 30 mins (very rare nowadays) but sometimes 1 minute. Again, the laptop has no problems connecting. beanie (7346)
325821 2005-03-08 19:17:00 Have you any electrical equipment or cell phone close to your computer.

Are you sure your email program is not doing a check for new mail automatically and is then set to disconnect the modem after a send/receive.
