325803 2005-02-17 19:20:00 Thats possible, different modems react differently to phone line noise.
What modem string have you tried so far and what is the modem name.

325804 2005-02-17 19:26:00 From another thread where I made this comment:

I and and two friends of mine have had this problem. Ring your ISP technical help desk and give them the error message that appears (if there is one). The problem could be line noise, which requires you to alter modem settings. It can also help if you remove / unplug any other items that connect to the home phone system, such as a fax, phone extensions. BTW, if you have to pay for ISP technical help, then bad luck - I have found that certain ISPs like Slingshot have what appears to be good cheap deals but the help desk is a 0900 number.

325805 2005-02-17 19:44:00 Hi beanie

It may pay to go through your settings to check there is no short timeout selected for the internet connection. Xtra has a good guide on doing this - Automatic Disconnections & Idle Disconnections (xtra.co.nz).

325806 2005-02-17 19:49:00 Thanks . Yeah, I've that thread . I've rung up Slingshot's help desk before and found them very unhelpful .

I've also rung up telecom before and they said there was no problems with the phone line . Yes I use an extension cord, but had no problems with it before . Could that have changed?

I'll have a look tonight at exaxtly what modem it is . Like I said, I've now installed a Dick Smith modem, and the problems are the same . I did have some viruses a while ago, but got them sorted with Avast . Now got Nortons and it says it's clean .

It's really driving me nuts :@@:

325807 2005-02-17 19:51:00 Thanks Jen, yep already gone through all that. Nothing is ticked that may disconnect after x mins. beanie (7346)
325808 2005-02-17 21:27:00 you say you rang telecom did they do a line test if not ask them too, its free. That will tell you if you have excessive line noise.

Another thing that may be causing this is v92 standard (most modern modems use this standard) which is not compatible with some telecom exchanges. There is a way to change the standard from v92 to v90, try this int' string "AT+MS=V90" or go to your modem manufacturer site see if they have information on how to change the standard from v92 to v90

325809 2005-02-19 04:55:00 try it without the extensio cord, try a new cord from the back of the pc to the phone jack, i once had a cord that was jamed in between the desk and the wall and it was munted and caused my disconnections Prescott (11)
325810 2005-02-19 04:56:00 also, dont laptop modems handle more line noise? i think ive heard of that before Prescott (11)
325811 2005-02-20 04:20:00 The modem is ' XH1154 DSE Modem 56k -PCI Int HaM V2'. I tried using the AT+MS=v90 string, but doesn't improve anything. Tries downloading an updated driver, but it says I've already got it. I'll try moving the computer closer to the jack, ie without the extension cord. That'll be a mission. All the wire, etc are behind desk, etc !! Any other ideas? beanie (7346)
