325651 2005-02-17 01:11:00 You say the audio is choppy -- video plays back normally? Or is it both?

Have you tried taking out the Creative card and enabling the on-board audio again, just to check?

325652 2005-02-17 02:10:00 It starts off audio only, then both later on.

I tried renenabling onboard audio, but nothing changed. I am loathe to rip out the Creative card completely then test, as I have heard of quite a few problems when you rip cards in and out and I don't want to make things worse.

325653 2005-02-17 06:27:00 firmware updates for dvd drive and motherboard ?

Tried another IDE cable?

Is the CPU usage going through the roof when these pause events are occuring?
Use the performance tab of the task manager to keep an eye on it.

325654 2005-02-17 06:31:00 i think this should do the trick :-)

google for a video plugin called ffds which is a direct show video filter which can help solve most choppy video playback problems

install and then reboot and then try again, im quite sure this will fix it . if it doesnt.. ummm..... but give that a go first

cheers

325656 2005-02-17 06:43:00 It is a Ricoh DVD/CDRW Drive. It worked flawlessly for th last few years under 98, I have not opened the case and played with it for a couple of years. I think the cable is also one of those fast ones with the little notch in it.

Yes the CPU does go to 100% when I play a DVD. What could this mean?

FFDShow.

Or try watching the DVDs in VLC player.

Region Free too, I might add :)

325659 2005-02-17 09:31:00 I have tried vlc player and a trial of WinDVD 6, and still no change, which makes me think it is not to do with the program I use, but something else. The high CPU usage does sound suspicious (especially since I have heard of people happily playing DVDs on older Celerons than mine), but as to what I can't figure out. pmchapman (2942)
325660 2005-02-17 10:18:00 Enable DMA on your DVD drive, this seems like the case because the CPU is doing this for your drive instead of the drive accessing it directly and I haven't seen it suggested.

I can't remember how to enable it though, BIOS has this option but I'm sure I didn't change anything here and did this in Windows somehow instead, I know some CD Writing programs can help enable it, also Overlay DVD programs that remove DVD protection/regions etc can enable it for you too. DVD Region Free+CSS or something like this can do it, but it's a trial/limited etc.

Cheers,
