325619 2005-02-16 19:50:00 Billy, your graphic card will be able to do the trick, bear with me, I'll check for driver updates, however ultimately, the 1st thing you need to do is get the crad to recognise the 2nd monitor/TV/projector. once this is accomplished, you will have the opinion of 'cloning' the 1st monitor or 'extending' the 1st monitor horizontially accross the 2 screens. Once this is in place, fire up Powerpoint and look for the dual monitor option.
Now, does the video card see the 2nd scree, do you have a manual?

325620 2005-02-16 20:25:00 First up I must ask what the topic of the presentation is? If you don't mind me asking of course.

After some googling, I mainly found threads by yourself mentioning that it was not capable of handling different displays with dual monitors. I couldn't find anything that said that it was capapble of this. Apart from the small blurb on the DuoView.

325621 2005-02-16 20:44:00 Okay Billy, the manual states holding the FN (function Key) & pressing F5 will scroll through the display settings for swapping between internal external and dual monitors, try that, it should work out of the box so to speak.
Failing that download the latest drivers from Toshiba at;

Good luck

The card is driving two monitors OK for simultaneous display, and will do so from either VGA port (the laptop or the port replicator).

Under Control panel>Display>Settings, below the single monitor image it says:

Display: (Multiple Monitors) on S3 Inc Savage/IX Display driver

Under Control panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Monitor I have both monitors displayed under monitor type.

Under Control panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>S3 Duoview+, I have the dual controller and LCD/CRT radio buttons selected.

Current driver is 5.12.01.7008-7.30.38 dated 21-3-2000

S3 display configuration utility is version 1.00.312-0303 (undated), and under "Resources" it says "none".

I have the Portege 3490CT user's manual, and have downloaded two further PDF manuals from Toshiba's website but they contain far less information.

Under Display controller in Appendix B of the user's manual it says the controller supports simultaneous display on the internal LCD and an external monitor, but makes no mention of dual independent display. (That is why I gave up on my original attempts last year and started looking for a PCMCIA video card.)

It is important that I get this function operational, one way or the other because the event is the biggest of its type in the US and attracts top International speakers. I am small fry in comparison, but I don't want to let the side down with an under-resourced presentation. I have a full two-hour slot to fill and I need access to my notes to ensure I don't forget key details.

Thank you for your assistance Sol, my optimism is increasing again :)

Cheers

Sorry Jeremy, I can't reveal that in any detail for privacy reasons, but in simple terms, my presentation is on the legal aspects and implications of various conditions and faults in particular classes of electro-mechanical machines .

The material is complex & multi-disciplined, and I will be speaking at a senior legal practitioners' forum, hence my desire to get my presentation up to the best standard possible . Don't want to let the Kiwi side down!

325624 2005-02-16 23:02:00 The Corporate line of Toshibas I work with, this is done in controll panel... display applet. failing that Billy give The Laptop Co a ring, they are the support agents for the Corporate line of Toshibas. beama (111)
325625 2005-02-17 00:18:00 Billy, have a look at this page and see if it helps you. To my reckoning, it clearly states the ability you are after, maybe we are missing a setting, however when I wish to 'Extend' the screen over 2 screen as you wish, from within display settings where you see both monitors, I click on the 2nd monitor and place tick on 'extend my desktop', however I am on XP pro, so the settings may be differently accessed.

325626 2005-02-17 00:52:00 Thanks Sol, I'll look at that .

Bear in mind though that I do not see the Monitor 1 & Monitor 2 option or "Extend my Desktop" in Settings, which was why I wondered if my video drivers were at fault . I assume that the Monitor 1 & Monitor 2 display is a Windows function, but that the OS has to see the correct conditions to display it?

I have to get on with other work right now but I'll bring the laptop & monitor back onto my desk this evening .

Cheers

P . S . Is it just me, or is that Deltachrome page really those awful colours? I see dark blue text on a dark purple background and have to highlight the text to read it!

Edit: Well I've read the Deltachrome pages, but I can't see whether it applies to my S3 Savage IX Duo View card or not . I'll try some searching later .

325627 2005-02-17 00:55:00 Yes, I thought the same thing Billy, I would however download the latest drivers 1st, uninstalled the grahics adapter from the control panel, reboot, when prompted for driver for new hardware found, point to the new drivers......

Good luck

325628 2005-02-17 08:38:00 Well, I've downloaded and installed new video drivers, the latest I could find on Toshiba's website (V5 . 12 . 1 . 7048 . dated 15/12/2000) but that was no help unfortunately . Still no "Monitor 1 & Monitor 2' option and no way to spread the desktop across two screens . I'm stuck on simultaneous display .

I am beginning to wonder if the hardware is specced lower than the driver, but so far everything says that the Savage/IX can do the job . Maybe there is another configuration utility hidden somewhere that I haven't found yet .

Human sacrifice is becoming an increasingly attractive proposition right now!
