Distance from the ISP makes absolutely no difference. Your mate could not be more wrong. That would mean people in Bluff couldn't use Orcon, Xtra, Quicksilver or any of the other major ISP's because they are 'based' in Orcon. Distance from your local telephone exchange is the issue.

325373 2005-02-20 08:38:00 Well, I have been with Ihug for several years, recently with Uhug Satellite.

Recently it has been dismall. Like many 'This page cannot be displayed'. Seems although I was not disconnected, there was no data available.

Right now, I am considering the Ihug Blink. Would you advise that?

To establish whether you'll get an acceptable connection just do a line check:

325375 2005-02-20 21:37:00 Definitely go with Bliink - changing over from modem to Broadband is the best thing that I ever did.

My wife loves me. Now she can surf the internet from the lounge with the notepad while I am doing my thing in the office :) :) :)

The deal looks the same as Xtra's, so probably the same modem:

325378 2005-02-21 06:01:00 Bitstream is a waste of time at the moment. It's been pathetic for weeks on end.
I know alot of ppl on Bitstream at the moment are considering switching to Ihug, despite the 12 month contract. (or $100 churn fee without contract).

The problem with Bitstream at the moment is poor latency and poor download speeds. I've barely been able to touch 15-20kb/s recently and forget streaming audio such as bbc radio.

It's the exact opposite of what they are advertising and they have been promising to fix it for along time, so be wary.

Having said that...I'm going to stay put for a while and see what happens. I'd be pretty miserable if I swapped now to Ihug for 12 months and then if they did an Orcon a few months down the line I'd be stuck.
