325318 2005-02-15 10:05:00 If you tried hooking up your laptop, whilst staying in a motel. Would you be billed, for any phone calls? As I have an account with unlimited access would that take care of any charges. micky (7329)
325319 2005-02-15 10:28:00 Greetings Micky,
Welcome to PressF1

I'd say it would pay to check with the Motel Reception about their policies on that.

They may offer free ADSL internet access, which means you can use the likes of Skype. You may be billed if the access isnt a local call.

Better to check in at each hotel than end up with a massive bill at the end of your stay!

Cheers

Chill.

325322 2005-02-15 18:26:00 I've stayed in a lot of motels, and generally, if you're going to use the phone, even for a local or 0867 call to dial out, they'll charge you between 15 and 30 cents a minute for the privledge. Some of them also will only have 2 or 3 'out' lines that can be used at any one time, so it pays to check.

Oh, and beware of places offering in room DSL access, most of them charge a connection fee, which can be upwards of $10 plus a charge of $10/MB or so.

Generally you're better off going to a net cafe and asking if you can hook yer laptop up there.

325323 2005-02-15 19:54:00 Yes the motel will charge you for the call, they generally charge for all calls. If you are only checking email and some light surfing then you are probably looking at a cost of a few dollars. Bear in mind that some motels have shocking phone lines and your connection speed could be terrible. Sb0h (3744)
325324 2005-02-15 20:58:00 That's interesting about motels. I have used my laptop in a number of hotels using the Paradise free dial up number, and they do not charge for that. I wonder why motels are different? John H (8)
325325 2005-02-16 07:48:00 No charge usually, unless the motel charges for local calls, and then it's usually a few cents a minute. Asking first though can save you from a nasty surprise. Shortstop (632)
325326 2005-02-16 07:56:00 Cost me 16c minute in a Napier motel a couple of weekends ago. juicytree (4858)
