2014-01-20 21:12:00 | news.yahoo.com Ken ;) Some might say they were flogging a dead horse out of desperation... I guess life can be tricky when the profits from your still to be decided platform (netbook/tablet/or something else) haven't yet replaced those from the dying platform that people are transitioning away from in droves.

2014-01-20 21:31:00 | I bought a new laptop in December. It has Win8 on it. I am probably far away in skill levels to a lot of guys on the forum and my IT work has been doing basic stuff (installations, hardware replacements and system clean-ups) for older friends etc. So, I consider I know my way about a computer reasonably well :) I am glad I have this basic knowledge of computers for, if I was an older person buying a new computer I feel I would be having a rough time of it, as the learning curve changed dramatically with the introduction of win 8 from win 7. I have got the hang of it now and even though I consider win8 to be a crock of sh*t, I now use it relatively well. Just that the journey was so long! My thoughts Ken :2cents:

2014-01-21 00:24:00 | news.yahoo.com Ken ;) pfft, more BS from a news source that didnt check facts & just gave HP some free publicity HP, Lenovo, Acer etc have NEVER stopped selling PC's with Win7 preinstalled : 'downgrade'. I have 3 NEW Win7 lappies Im preppping right now. Win7 was ALLWAYS available on some models, more often on pro/buseness class pc/lappies. Its the toaster shops who were stuck selling Win8 Win8 good or bad now doesnt matter, Win8's reputation is trashed. This sort of arcticle only fans the fire But MS only have themselves to Blame, all they had to do was a few basic concessions to the wants of IT & the public. They refused. What did they really expect. ie A start menu single click shutdown not trying to trick , yes trick, home users into thinks they need to sign up for some MS mail package/live ID/whatever call the AV MSE, not Defender. The defender Brand name is dirt after all these years MAKE THE METRO INTERFACE A OPTION from day 1. NOT the main interface. Yes SP1 helps somewhat, but its now too late. Give us the install COA key/sticker. Wait till failed HD's have to be replaced in Win8 machines a few years down the road, thats going to be a headache for many. Win9, that will just be the Win8 OS with some tweeking of the gui to make it seem like a new OS. Just like they did with Vista/Win7 . A few concessions from MS & everyone, everyone would of been lovin 8 . :)

2014-01-21 00:33:00 | This is interesting, is it too late ? bgr.com windowsitpro.com “A new team at Microsoft that’s responsible for overall OS development has clearly spent the past few months evaluating and then dropping most of the ‘my way or the highway’ silliness that doomed the original Windows 8 release,”

Signin -- Easy enough to bypass if you look what you are doing when setting up, the option is there. none of My W8 PC's or any I build have to be signed into unless you want, its straight into the OS. AV -- Agree, not the best idea they have. Metro interface -- You can in 8.1 select to boot directly to desktop, again most of the things can be done from the main desktop, no need to even go anywhere near the tiles. No COA-- whats the problem ?? If you purchased W8 /8.1 separately you DO get a COA & DVD, if its a name brand PC and the HDD has failed its not needed as the COA is in the BIOS and all you do is boot from a W8 / 8.1 DVD ( which you would need to do anyway from a blank drive) and it AUTOMATICALLY picks up and puts in the COA, no need to enter it. ( Ive reinstalled several W8's with no COA on name brand PC's) |

2014-01-21 04:31:00 | Well, I have Win 8.1 pretty much as close to a Windows desktop I've always had as you can get without using shells like Start8 or Classic Shell. It is fast, but some or much of that is because I built up a new computer for 8.1, and also went to a SSD. It would be nice to be able to decouple the Tile world from the Desktop world, if MS have any sense they will do this for the next version. I wonder how much of a drag the tiles are on the desktop, having them lurking under the bonnet, but then of course there are two bonnets under which things can lurk ! I'm reminded a bit of the days of the Internet Exploder/Netscape wars when MS insisted IE was part of the system and could not be removed, or the lengths they went to hiding MSDOS, pretending it hardly existed, culminating in ME. One of the cosmetic features that should be put back is the 'Window color and appearance' applet that gave much more customisation than is available in 8.1. The windows border default width is too wide presumably to facillitate moving with a touch screen. Borders can be made narrower by going into windows metrics, but the colour is the same as the title bar colour which I don't like, especially when using Firefox. I used to have fancy 2 colour title bars going from red merging into yellow :) I don't like the translucent taskbar either.
