Separate portable insurance can work well for people who have no existing contents insurance. You'll pay your premium yearly or monthly, depending on your provider. Does anyone know of companies here who would cover just your gadgets (laptop/tablet/phones)? The excess on contents insurance is high, and if premiums went up as a result, it wouldn't really be worth making a claim. |

| 1365473 | 2014-01-19 04:48:00 | It is not likely to be worthwhile insuring gadgets. Any insurance payout would be most unlikely to be enough for the full replacement of anything unless the item is stolen when it is virtually brand new. If the item is more than a few months old it would be outdated anyway and you would most likely be wanting to upgrade. You would be far better off just self insuring ie. running a special purpose savings account which you put a small amount in each pay period and only use if you need to replace something. | CliveM (6007) | ||

I carry a phone and table = $2,000 with me wherever I go. If I have my laptop with me that's another 2k. These things are very easy to lose, break or spill things on; and also very expensive. I have had insurance with Vodafone and Telecom. I have only had to make one claim, thankfully, 6 odd years ago and I recieved a new phone in the same price range. Paying 10-15$ a month and a 150 excess still a lot cheaper than "self insuring" for say $4,000. Having a look here (www.money.co.uk) seems quite attractive. |

You hope that they win the bet. :) Seriously I would only insure "Gadgets" if they were essential to my income/work and I knew that I could not replace them at short notice. That situation is unlikely to occur in any successful business. I have paid that much in home/contents/vehicle insurance over the years that I would have to crash my car into the house and burn the lot down to ever recover the amount I have paid out in premiums. |

| 1365477 | 2014-01-20 05:32:00 | If I have a look at the stuff I bought in the last 5yrs that I carry with me out, I have lost only my $600 bought Nokia E75 after 3yrs (36 months). How much would be be worth after 3yrs maybe $150 (?) and how much insurance premium over the total 5yrs would I have paid and how much is the excess ... Even if I lost a laptop computer too once every 5yrs, after 2yrs it may have a market value of $300 (?). But how much premium would I paid and the excess. It is like more riskier stuff like travelling. The excess is usually at least $200 per claim so if you get injured. It's one for medical expenses, one for lost belongings, one for flights .... Look the clauses too. If it was your fault that you left it in a taxi or on a train is it still ok ... I don't know either way .... The clauses I read with travelling they're like head to Fiji for snorkelling sure - but only with a guide or if you are licensed, ski sure at a ski field only, bungy, rock climbing those stuff not included. Glaciers probably not either. You could call them and they might if you pay a higher premium but they could still say no. Even if you get ok for it they send you to a public hospital first or they might even say they will fly you back and have the treatment in NZ. i still have a working Nokia 5110 on my table :D I have paid that much in home/contents/vehicle insurance over the years that I would have to crash my car into the house and burn the lot down to ever recover the amount I have paid out in premiums. Or unless it has a electrical fire and blows up or you or they cause the accident and they have a late model BMW. My mum backed into a car - $400 panelbeating job to fix our car we paid $300 excess. But they also paid for the other car too ... But if I was backing into a lamp post then maybe we pay $300 and the insurance company pays $100. |
