1379350 2014-07-18 02:14:00 If its still on XP, you cant be that serious about security

I was considering suggesting an upgrade, but that would have done nothing but confuse said friend :p

It MUST have a Win7 License. Possibly came bundled with a Win7 restore CD
there were no XP licenses 2 years ago. Just downgrades
First thing I would suggest is load Win7 on it.

NOD32 is NOT the panacea that so many claim
I have seen many NOD32 PC's get infected (we were a NOD32 reseller)
Its often user stupidity that gets PC's infected, no AV can prevent that. Was thinking that, Xp has been discontinued for longer than two years :stare:

As for Nod -- While no AV is perfect, agree you cant protect against stupidity :D Seen some people even when the Antivirus ( this is any Antivirus) warns them they still allow something through.

There was once a guy told me to install some of the programs he wanted and to visit some sites ( Read as Porn) , he actually disabled Nod32 first, because it would stop him :groan:

Some ( but not all ) Resellers actually dont have a clue on how to setup software either. I've been to plenty of places where someone has installed Nod and left it as default. There are a few options that make it work A LOT better, but the installer didn't activate them. Personally in the 11 years I've been selling / dealing with Nod I've never gotten any infections on my own PC's and I can tell you sometimes Nod is going nuts stopping things. I've deliberately infected my workshop computers sometimes, but that's on purpose when doing some testing.

1379352 2014-07-18 05:34:00 I have an idea - any time she has an issue which a reinstall can fix, no matter how minor, I'll wipe it then and upgrade :p pcuser42 (130)

Yeah, Ive found often the same person getting infected more than once . No AV can help there. Not good in a corporate environment.

But I would say, any paid AV should be better at detection & removal than free Malwarebytes , but none are .

The problem with the free Malwarebyes is its not active the whole time, it wont update by its self, and you cant schedule scans either. EVERYTHING has to be done manually. Generally many people are lazy - they wont do regular updates or scans. Many people wont even clean the junk ( temp files etc) out of their computers. The Free programs -- Theres countless times I've been to peoples places and they have not run such programs since last visit, which could be a year before.

1379355 2014-07-18 08:43:00 I know what you mean. I checked out the nieces PC in oz the other day with teamviewer. Mbam was installed but noone had updated it since I looked at it, like 3 mths ago.

Updated it then did a scan and it found a lot of malware. And she was wondering why she was having probs lol

Are there programs/utilities that can schedule, open, and run free malwarebytes/antivirus? I recall some antivirus programs had command lines to run them say with a batch file, a while back.

I recall some antivirus programs had command lines to run them say with a batch file, a while back. Any Antivirus, Free or paid, should have the options to run at a scheduled time. Any antivirus should be working the entire time. Meaning if you are browsing the internet and come across a site that has dangerous content or some sort of infection, the AV should stop it.

You can set a schedule on any windows computer to run any program on a scheduled time, but with the likes of the free Malwarebytes, you have to click "Scan Now" to activate the scan. Don't think theres any way to get it to auto scan on the free version.

dO YOU HAVE THE MALWAREBYTES that you pay for? Sorry about caps. Nope - just the free versions. I do manual scans every week, never finds anything as Nod seems to be stopping anything. ALWAYS run Ccleaner when finished every day, only takes a couple of seconds.
