1379340 2014-07-16 22:30:00 Just what are the specs of this old laptop anyway. If its quite slow , then modern AV just may kill it , speed wise.
Saying that, there are still some pretty quick , old XP laptops out there (many arnt though)

1379341 2014-07-16 23:00:00 Apparently said laptop was only two years old (why it didn't have Windows 7 is a mystery) - IIRC it had some form of Core 2 Duo and 2GB RAM, so not sluggish. pcuser42 (130)

1379344 2014-07-17 05:39:00 I agree, it's not worth pissing around for the cost of a few bucks a year for NOd32. It'll save you way more than it's worth in lost time both fixing it when it gets infected and the slow-down from the free AV's.

Just get them to bite the bullet and get it, it's not expensive.

www.pcpro.co.uk Good for a laugh , its months out of date -- 21 Feb 2014 -- you cant trust those types of reviews, never can never will. The REAL review is what Tech see all the time on peoples computers. Avast -- Tell the person whos computer I had to reinstall last week that Avast is good - it was reinstalled due to infections making a total mess of the whole system to the point it couldn't boot.

Once I got it booting no surprise the Antivirus was damaged to a non working state.

I slaved their drive to recover their data, the workshop PC that has Nod on went nuts stopping infections even before setting a scan going.

1379347 2014-07-17 07:57:00 If you decide to install Avast I recommend that you set "updates" to manual
to avoid the too frequent checking for new definitions which can be a bother
when busy otherwise online. This will put a warning symbol on the taskbar icon
but you can ignore it as the program will otherwise be fully protective.
I manually update avast weekly.

You can turn that notification on the icon off too... one thing I like about Avast is its array of options :D

I usually update once or twice a week too.

2 Years old...
It MUST have a Win7 License. Possibly came bundled with a Win7 restore CD
there were no XP licenses 2 years ago. Just downgrades
First thing I would suggest is load Win7 on it.

If its still on XP, you cant be that serious about security

NOD32 is NOT the panacea that so many claim
I have seen many NOD32 PC's get infected (we were a NOD32 reseller)
Its often user stupidity that gets PC's infected, no AV can prevent that.
