326072 2005-02-18 01:42:00 I've installed a serial ATA drive (200GB) on my pc but is not recognised by the pc. Checking the BIOS it was also not picked up there either. I have checked Seagate website and followed their installation advice and troubleshooter but not happened. I have doubled checked my cables and they all seem to be fine. Doers someone have some advice or come accross the same problem? Kind Regards eds (7357)
326073 2005-02-18 02:17:00 Is SATA onboard?? Have u connected the data cable and the power to the SATA hdd? The cable that comes with a SATA is only data not power.

If the BIOS doesnt pick it up, it doesnt sound like you have power going to it. Also, what operating system are you using??

326074 2005-02-18 02:27:00 Yes, SATA is onboard and I have connected both serial cable and power cables(after getting an adapter cable). My thoughts were also that it could be a power problem; I shall recheck the terminals to make sure contact is perfect. Speedy, I have just read your responses to "hamstar" -06/02/2005 and have got a lot out of there. At work at the moment and will check tonight when home. Thanks. If I'm still stuck after tonight, I send another post.

Regards :)

326075 2005-02-18 12:47:00 In the BIOS setup I have changed the following and my new SATA harddrive apears as a third primary master but it still does not appear in My Computer. It is now also present in Device Manager.

Integrated Preipherals: under " on-chip IDE Configuration "I have enabled S-ATA (keep enabled).

Anything else I should do?

Many thanx.

326076 2005-02-18 23:20:00 What operating have u got? I take it the SATA isnt the hdd with the operating system on it??

If you're using XP, or windows 2000, you'll need at least SP1 or 2 for XP, and SP3/4 for 2000, to read the whole hard drive . I take it the hard drive isnt formatted yet either, since you cant see it .

If you have XP, go to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management . Look for the SATA entry here . If it is there, and u see an entry saying unallocated, you can higlight the entry and initialise / format it .

Also, if u have 2000 or XP, it'll be better if u format it in NTFS, NOT FAT32 . On the other hand, if u dont have 2000/XP/NT, (you have 98, or other), it maybe a bit trickier for it to find all of the hard drive .

You may have to partition it into 6 or so partitions . . . . . . And it has to be formatted in FAT32, NOT NTFS . As 98 cant read NTFS partitions .
