326302 2005-02-18 22:44:00 :help: Suddenly noticed that all my partitions except c: have mysteriously vanished. Although the data appears to be on the drive...disk management is showing a great gaping empty free space where my partitions used to be. In all i seem to have "lost" around 150GB although it appears to not have been erased just inaccessible.

If anyone can help i would be most grateful as a lot of missing data is pics that cannot be replaced.

Thanks

326305 2005-02-19 01:56:00 Be very careful. ;)

Were the partitions NTFS? Do you know exactly how big each one was?

The MS partitioner can probably create them again, but destructively. :(

Are you familiar with Linux, or do you have a friend who is? A Knoppix CD (that's a "live CD" version, which boots and runs from the CD, without using hard disks) from DSE ($4.95) will let you look at the disk, and cfdisk should remake the partitions without formatting them. Then you could mount the partitions and examine them. That might be all that's needed. (If they are readable in Linux, XP should be able to see them again).

However, even in Windows XP (;)) , it's not normal to "lose" partitions. Partition tables shouldn't be damaged. So you might still have a major data loss. ;(

326306 2005-02-19 03:29:00 If a lot of the lost data is pics that can't be replaced, could I ask why you didn't have backup copies on a Hard drive, a CD or A DVD or some other such media.

Sure it's duplication, it may even cost a few dollars but what is your data worth to you.

326307 2005-02-19 11:00:00 Have got most of it backed up on cd but were a few that had not yet been put on disc .

Am I right in thinking that the hard disk could be seriously damaged and I may need to get another?

What could have caused this?

326308 2005-02-19 11:26:00 If you think this is true, stop using the computer NOW.

Get "GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/)" install to recover your lost information.
