326025 2005-02-17 23:26:00 How easy is it to install ram in a loptop?
I have done it several times on a tower system no problems, but I've never looked under the hood of a laptop.
It is second hand so no warranty issues to void :)
Do laptops use the same type of ram as tower systems or do they require something different (smaller/more compact).
If it is easy enough I could save myself some money :)

Cheers

326026 2005-02-17 23:31:00 Laptops use SO-DIMMS, desktops use DIMMS - the laptop memory modules are a lot smaller and more expensive.

It depends where the RAM upgrades are fitted as to how easy it is to upgrade the RAM - on some laptops you have to pull apart half the laptop to get to the slot, others it's just a panel on the underside of the laptop.

326027 2005-02-17 23:41:00 I did it not too long ago, search for my thread. Was not difficult at all. Only difficulty I had was finding a screwdriver small enough for the tiny screws and actually locating the underside RAM panel. :p Could get tricky if you have to pull apart the whole thing to find the RAM, but if it's on the underside then it's very basic to do. Just ground yourself and you shouldn't fry anything. E|im (87)
326028 2005-02-18 00:08:00 You dont lift the hood for this job all you would see is a bunch of numbers and letters.

You need to get on your back and slide under to get access.

Once there take off the cover, and follow your nose.

Level of difficulty: easy

326029 2005-02-18 02:40:00 It depends. ;)

Some manufacturers have a removable panel on the bottom which gives access to memory sockets. Some hid the memory under disk drives. Some make you remove the keyboard. Some used their own proprietary memory cards.

First look at the bottom. A screw with an arrow pointing at it is probably OK to remove. Leave others alone. If there's no luck there, try to remove the keyboard. (carefully -- the cables are easier to pull out than to replace). This usually requires the removal of a trim panel ... I use my thumbnail to pop the edge of trim panels. You should not have to use force -- that breaks things.

Tell us the make and model of laptop. That will lets us know what we are talking about. ;)
