325938 2005-02-17 12:11:00 Hi boys and girls

Have a problem that a friend and I are trying to sort out.

After updating Internet Explorer to IE6 on a very very old machine (166 pentium) running Windows 98 with 80Mb of RAM, only 4 fonts remained, AVG anti virus wouldn't run and niether would Office 2000 apps which all ran before. Unable to uninstall anything to reload apps so reloaded Win98 straight over the top to restore operational functioning and fonts etc then was able to reload avg and that's all fine now- everything great again except Office apps. Still not able to run though shown in progam list but not shown in Add/Remove list. When we try to run an Office app such as Word or Outlook get the message that it has to be loaded from where it was previously loaded. When we try to reload Office 2000 it fails with a message about install patch or package (sorry, don't have exact message in front of me).

Any ideas? the system is running fine agin (including JetStream connection) except for Office and Office only and we are unable to uninstall to reload as not shown in Add/Remove list and unable to reload from the completely legal legit CD that was used when Office was loaded a couple of years ago. We are open to ideas.

Cheers.

325939 2005-02-17 13:32:00 How full is the Hard Drive? Rob99 (151)
325940 2005-02-17 17:35:00 If there’s plenty of room on your HDD you could try opening Word and going Help – Detect & Repair .

You will probably be asked for your Office disk . :)

A registry cleanup with any of the “Registry Cleaners” may also be in order .

Cheers

325941 2005-02-17 20:32:00 Thanks for the replies. It is appreciated.

Hoped to use the the Detect & Repair option yesterday but when starting Word got the dialouge about the install and then Word shut down, so could'nt reach the Detect & Repair option.

Unsure how full HDD is. But from memory that not an issue.

Will see to running JV16 Power Tools or WinOptimiser to sort thru the reg.

Again, thanks for the replies and if there are any other ideas out there....? Will let you know how it goes.

Cheers.

325942 2005-02-17 20:38:00 If you can open XL Detect & Repair is there too.

I "think" it looks at the whole "Office 2000 Programme" not just XL?

I was going to suggest doing a repair of Office through Add/Remove programs, but if Office does not appear then that is out of the question. Have you tried searching for your normal.dot file (you might have to unhide files first), and renaming it to normalold.dot, and then trying to open up Word?

325944 2005-02-17 22:10:00 Another thought Billy is: :)

If you have your “Office 2000” disk you can start from there.

From memory, I think you get the option to repair or re-install. ;)

325945 2005-02-17 22:50:00 Go to My Computer

Right click the C: hard drive

Select properties

How much free space do you have?

325946 2005-02-18 03:20:00 Hi Guys

In answer to the questions:
There is 2 . 5Gb free on a 4Gb HDD
Have run WinOptimiser to clean the reg
When we put in the Office CD to reload/repair the exact message is headed up 'Windows Installer' and says "This patch package could not be opened . Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package" .

It is not possible to open any Office application .
It is no problem at all running or installing anything other than Office 2000 .

Thanks for ideas so far . It is appreciated .

Cheers,
Billy .
