326816 2005-02-20 09:48:00 Ok, this one got me puzzled. I know my way around networks, built a few as well as manage a couple.

Have 2 desktops (XP Pro) and 1 laptop (XP Home) with a D-LINK DSL-G604T router/modem. First Desktop is wired to the router while the other desktop and laptop are wireless. All have a different PC name, all on the workgroup “home” and have the same user name and password on all 3. Have checked and double checked this. All have internet access. The wired desktop and wireless laptop can share files/printer as expected but the other desktop shows in “view network PC’s” on the other 2 PC’s but get the usual “ have not got permission blah blah” when trying to access. The rouge desktop will give the same error while trying to find the networked PC’s.

Rouge desktop has no firewall installed and the XP firewall is off. I have set IP’s manually as well used the network wizard (only out of desperation). IP’s are in the 10.1.1.0 range with 255.255.255.0 for subnet and DNS 10.1.1.1. The wireless has encryption disabled and can ping all PC’s. The only thing I can think of is the authentication options of the wireless adaptor. Have tried various options, disabled etc but still no go. The Laptop and 1 PC are new and the rouge desktop is older.

Any ideas as this has me lost for answers.

Also have MS changed where “use simple file sharing” option is as the laptop (XP Home) does not have it in the normal place and I can’t find it. Yet the new XP box I find the option where I would expect to find it.

Cheers

326817 2005-02-20 10:05:00 Do you have a folder shared on the rouge PC? Rob99 (151)
326818 2005-02-20 10:08:00 I believe that windows xp home only allows simple file sharing.

But you can disable it kinda

see this discussion (www.experts-exchange.com)

326819 2005-02-20 10:30:00 Rob99 - Yes a folder is shared. Rouge PC can't see other 2 PC's or itself in "view network computers". Just gives the error message.

gibler - i have turned off simple file sharing in XP home before, have MS changed it so you no longer can disable it??

326820 2005-02-20 10:37:00 Have you given them their own IP or does the router give them out automatically?

Have you ever had Sygate installed on that PC?
Rob99 (151)
326821 2005-02-20 10:45:00 have tried both, manually and DHCP. Sygate may have been installed at sometime in the past. I am setting this up for someone else and not sure what has been past installs. Not installed at present though. berryb (99)
326822 2005-02-20 11:09:00 I have reciently sorted out a network problem.

The computer did have Sygate installed about 18months ago and was removed, replaced with Norton.

Sorry I cant remember what the file was, but it was something like syg.exe in the running processes, couldnt track it down anywhere.

Used jv16 to remove all traces of Sygate.

Worked fine after that.

326823 2005-02-20 11:13:00 Can that PC ping everything on the network, even itself?

Try changing the workgroup to MSHOME

326824 2005-02-20 11:27:00 I know that the sharing bit on Windows can be a pain in the ass to get to work. The service can hang when trying to access resources on other computers trough My Network Places. Have experienced that running the command "\\Computer name \Shared resource" from the command prompt can sometimes "unhang" the sharing. Have worked for me in the past. onlyteo (7364)
326825 2005-02-20 11:35:00 Confused over the whole network settings,

Do you mean DNS or gateway?

10.x.x.x subnet should be 255.0.0.0 but I guess this isn't a problem if the other computers subnets are the same, although I've never tried differently, so it could be?
