326380 2005-02-19 02:02:00 :help: i have a hp pavilion 520. it has a 40 gig hard drive and 384 mb. of ram. and 1.2 ghz. it used to run like a dream and now its running like my worst nightmare. it would run tons of games, graphics prog., movies, music. you name it, it took it on like a pro. (and still never used more than 3/4 of the hard drive) over time, the performace started to deteriorate. before long it would lock up so bad that the only way to fix it is to run the HP recovery program (press F8 before windows starts) it helped but then after so many times of that, it slowly chipped away at the performance. i pulled everything off but the bare nessecities and would try to run a game, or even a simple emulator and it won't run it anymore. so thinking the memory went bad i replaced it. it began running like it's old self again but now 6 months later i'm back at the same problem. what is wrong? will i be stuck replacing memory every six months? can somebody help? digitalfatality (7371)
326381 2005-02-19 02:08:00 Have u ever defragged your hard drive?? That'll slow things down after a while.

Also, get something like this www.ccleaner.com and get rid of all the temp files off the hard drive.

And also check for spyware once in a while from here

www.spybot.info or here http: and get the SE version 1.05.

326382 2005-02-19 02:11:00 Hi and welcome to Pressf1. You don't say anything about yr regular maintenance routine so maybe you don't have one. I would suggest for a start a thorough clean up and you can do this by going to the FAQs here at Pressf1 and go through the Basic Maintenace FAQ.

Chances are it's full of temp files and cookies and history and crudware and malware and dodgyware. Give the maintenace FAQ a shot.

326383 2005-02-19 02:13:00 "Replacing the memory"?

Memory either works or it doesn't. Non working memory does cause problems. But replacing it fixes the problems. If the memory isn't faulty, replacing it won't fix the problems.

How full is your disk? Have you ever defragmented it? Can you defragment it now? Have you checked for viruses? Recently?

A disk which is very full or badly fragmented, or both, will cause poor performance.

326384 2005-02-19 02:13:00 i've done all of that. my antivirus program is completly up to date. i have 2 spyware programs running. i always run disk clean up and defrag. and it still is perfroming like somebodys old truck. the real probelm is it won't run programs that it usedto run effortlessly. digitalfatality (7371)
326385 2005-02-19 02:16:00 i'm using 1/4 of my hard drive now
it is completly defraged and little to no useless files on here.

326386 2005-02-19 02:22:00 start>run>type msconfig into the box,hit enter.

Select the startup tab, then report back how many are in there,as an example the comp im on at the moment has....2, And ive just disabled one of them so i now have 1....My Anti-virus.

326387 2005-02-19 02:24:00 Maybe it's not that the computer is actually slower, but that your expectations have increased. If you see a new one with three times the speed, yours is suddenly slow.;)

Adding memory might give a speed boost ... if you are buying new games they will probably eat memory. Another 128MB would be a reasonably cheap upgrade.

It might pay to check the BIOS settings for the memory, and also check that disks have DMA enabled.

326388 2005-02-19 02:27:00 i saw 42 items there (god thats a lot!) is that a problem? digitalfatality (7371)
326389 2005-02-19 02:29:00 it's not that, because i didn't change the programs i was running, the only thing that i updated was win xp and norton antivirus. i have progrmas and games that it used to run but refuses to run now. digitalfatality (7371)
