326767 2005-02-23 16:45:00 Just a few observations from recent experience.
AMD 64 3200+ is a few dollars cheaper than a P4 3.2. It is noticeably faster.
AMD runs 4 or 5 degrees hotter but still well within limits.
BUT motherboards for AMD seem to be a few dollars dearer.
In fact my amd 64 3200+ and Asus motherboard cost about $50 more than my second choice, P4 3.2 and gigabyte m/b.
RAM. So far no noticeable difference between 1024 megs of Corsair.(2 x 512 megs matched) and 2x 512 megs of El Cheapo No Name off the shelf ram at about a fifth the price of the Corsair.
Hard Disks. SATA is noticeably faster than Pata and they run cooler. No ribbon cables to trap the heat.
Graphics. Never pay more than say $350 for a Video Card. Dearer ones may be slightly better but if they are I can't see it.

I buy all my parts from Ascent. I always get what I ask for and have never been let down.

Cordless joysticks mice and keyboards. UGH!!!! Sometimes they work sometimes they don't.
Stick with USB.

326768 2005-02-24 05:43:00 Well. I think I'll get a new monitor, keyboard and mouse. Cos my monitor is a 14 inch CRT, and the original keyboard and (not optical) mouse from my TradeMe 500MHz Compaq. $280 a year ago. My parents have a 2.8 GHz P4 type of computer, which I play some games on. It has a GeForce 4 Ti 4200. It's a decent computer. However, I want my own fast computer.
Yes, my parents. I'm still at high school. I need money. I do web design. Anyone want their site made all shiny with XHTML-Strict and CSS? I might make another thread about that...

I'm not entirely clear on which motherboards on the Ascent site do and don't have PCI-E, and same with the graphics cards. I wouldn't want to end up having one PCI-E and the other AGP. In fact, I probably wouldn't want both AGP. Just PCI-E.

And JJJJJ, I can agree with your dislike of cordless mice and keyboards. I don't like having more batteries. Though these days they have charging things you just stick the mouse in when you're not using it. Don't suppose there'd be much point in that for a keyboard.
I guess I'll go AMD for the processor...

Get no-name memory? Anyone else recommend that? I mean, sure I don't need top-o'-the-line Corsair, but isn't it still best to get something at least slightly above nothingness?
What are the merits of different types of memory? There's SD-RAM, and DDR SD-RAM, and Dual Channel DDR SD-RAM, and DDR2 RAM, and DIMMs, and SO-DIMMS. Some graphics cards have DDR3. And there are different frequencies. What does "Registered" mean? And ECC? The prices from different manufacturers for Dual Channel DDR-SDRAM seem pretty similar. About $550-$600. Actually A-Data has that for $250. You maay be riight. Is 2x512MB significantly better than a single 1 GB? Getting a single GB could make getting another GB later easier. How many memory socket things does a motherboard have? 2, or more than 2? Though you need a pair of modules for Dual Channel memory. I think. Matched.

Dunno about a $350 graphics card. Sure, there's not a great difference from $700 to $2000, but I'd thought there was between $350 and $700?

I'll probably get SATA. Should I get two hard drives and get RAID-0? I probably can't afford that... though in a year RAID will be cheaper... A 120 GB SATA drive is about $150. Better to have RAID Hard Drives or step up the processor/RAM/graphics card? I don't see myself needing over 120GB for a fair while. Though digital video...

zqwerty, why would I talk privately with Metla? I mean, I suppose I could, but what's wrong with the forums?

Quite possibly I should kinda leave all this as it is and come back when I actually have $2500 and it's relevant. What was this thread originally about? Ah yes, I just wanted a few websites. Thanks Prescott for the Ascent site, it's good. Any others like Thermaltake, Lian-Li, Alienware, etc though? I like looking at things I'll never be able to afford, or that I'd be better off not spending money on. :D And they're more browsable than PC Alpha.
What's a real decent PC news type site? Like PC World magazine but online. I have a subscription to PC World. :)

326769 2005-02-26 03:39:00 Regarding the graphics card. I'll get PCI-E, because it's future-proofing. As is getting a good card. PCI-E cards may be more expensive than AGP, I'm not sure. But a $700 PCI-E graphics card delivers just a bit under twice the performance of a $350 one. Specifically, cards based on the ATI X800 XT or NVidia 6800GT give almost twice the performance of cards based on the NVidia 6600GT. The ATI X700 is further below the 6600GT.

The X800 XT cards range in price from $700 to $1200, without much performance difference.

$700 cards also come with considerably more bundled software than $350 cards. DVD playing stuff, new-ish games - sometimes Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 - and overclocking utilities.

Why didn't anyone reply to my last (huge) post?

Wanganui? Well, I guess it's closer to Wellington than Auckland is... but it still works the same as Auckland, cos it isn't somewhere I can just go one afternoon.

But yes, thank you for clarifying that particular point.
