327433 2005-02-22 16:59:00 Hi,
I'm having a problem with my CD Rom. About 6 months ago my son said that burner wouldn't finish burning a disk. It would stop about half way. Just recently, the problem has gotten worse. If I or my daughter put a game in the CD, as it speeds up it crashes the whole computer! The game would load to various degrees, with each load attempt would get a little father into the load, until it would eventually load completely. To compensate for that, we've been putting the game CD into the DVD burner to run which was working fine. Now the DVD burner is crashing the computer! I spent about an hour updating the firmware on both of them last night. The CD still crashes the computer but I got the game to play on the DVD. I'm getting very frustrated. I was planning on replacing the CD burner because I thought that would solve the both the burning and crashing problems but now I'm not so sure. Now I don't know if the DVD game load worked because of the firmware update or just the fact the comouter was on for an hour and it warmed up. I run XP home SP2. The CD is a Lite-on and the DVD is a Pioneer 105. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It might be the videocard drivers as well.

327435 2005-02-22 21:07:00 Thanks Speedy, I'll give it a try but why would the games work on the dvd drive but not the CD drive? DirectX and the video drivers would work the same not matter what drive I'm using, correct? Could my problems have to do with faulty memory? My daughter says that I suffer from it, why not the computer? Scuda (7262)
327436 2005-02-22 23:04:00 Thats possible. The memory maybe faulty Scuda.

BUT does it only happen with the cd/dvd?? Or when u play a game??

Does the system crash, when u do normal things?? Surfing the net, using a word processor, or just using windows??

If it crashes often and when u do basic things, besides playing games and using the CD, then it may well be the memory...

Check in control panel / admin tools / event viewer. The 3rd option
here. See if there are any errors. It may be a conflict between 2 devices in your system. Check device manager.. See If anything has an ! or X
or double click on the devices that show here. Under the general tab,
see if anything says it's conflicting... Did u install any hardware recently???

Did u install the cd/dvd burners?? If so, is one on master the other on slave??

And what IDE connection did you put them on?? Primary/Secondary??

And also, either burner arent on the same IDE connection as a hard drive are they?? As this can cause problems.

327437 2005-02-23 13:34:00 Speedy,
I tried an experiment last night. I turned on the computer and put a game in the DVD drive. As the drive sped up, the computer shut down. I turned the computer back on and left it on while I had dinner. After dinner, I put the same game in the DVD drive and it worked fine. So I'm a little confused. Doing other things on the computer such as surfing the net, using Word or Excel, playng other games not needing CD's play fine. Now, on a rare occurance, the computer will shut down during boot-up. That used to happen a lot but not so much anymore.
Thanks for your help. My brother's reccomendation is to take the computer out back and put a bullet in the CPU but with a son in college and a daughter going soon, I can't afford a new one. I ordered a 512 DIMM this morning to check out if it might be the RAM. I only have 512 in the computer all ready and wanted to up it anyways so this was a good excuse. I will double check to see if there are any hardware conflicts but I checked before and didn't see any. This is a problem that has been coming on slowly over time. One last question. Could a bad CD burner cause a conflict with the DVD drive? I'm grasping at straws, I know.

327438 2005-02-23 20:57:00 A bad cd burner shouldnt affect the dvd burner . BUT if u installed both and forgot to change one to master and the other to slave . You would have probs, with both .

And if either are on the same IDE as a hdd, you may also have probs . If u have a spare IDE cable, chuck it on the cd/dvd burner . It may also be faulty .
