327308 2005-02-22 01:30:00 Hello,
Haven't been in NZ for some time so I was wondering which shops are good. I used to use OEM Computers and Hotchips. Had a search and found Ascent and their prices are similar to OEM's. What other shops are good?

The reason I ask is that I will be returning to NZ in August, and next week I'm going to a conference in Yokohama and will be passing through Tokyo. So I'm gonna visit Akihabara (Tokyo's electronics district) and if motherboards etc. are cheaper there than in NZ I will buy one to bring back with me.

Thanks.

PS. NOT looking forward to internet in NZ

327309 2005-02-22 01:40:00 If you are just wanting to compare prices directly, have a look at http://www.pricespy.co.nz/ for the hardware prices. It will give you some indication of the going rates. Keep in mind that shop with the lowest price is not necessarily the best place to buy from. Service and reliability come into it as well. :) Jen (38)

Your last comment is very true. Do you not have a recommendation?

327311 2005-02-22 04:09:00 I have used Ascent before. They have a good range, prices are good and their service is very good. if you are paying by credit card note that they will want to verify your address (ie you need to be in the phonebook or something similar). They do have direct credit to their bank account though.

I am not sure how they are if you don't know much technical stuff and require help, but I guess if you're thinking of buying a motherboard and installing it yourself you know a bit.

If you're purchasing in Japan it may also pay to stick with brands that are sold in New Zealand for warranty/service purposes and keep the receipt!

327312 2005-02-22 04:28:00 I have used Ascent a lot, and have had very good service from them. They are very professional, acknowledge orders quickly, and organise deliveries as quickly as their suppliers will co-operate.

I have needed support on two items; one had a faulty power supply on delivery (which was a common fault with that item) and a replacement was quickly organised. The other time I could not get an item to work (it was a configuration issue, not a fault with the product) and I received prompt and helpful assistance.

The only problem I have ever had with an Ascent order was not their fault. Their courier (a well known national company) had some dishonest employees who ripped me off along with heaps of other individuals and firms. The courier employees eventually ended up in Court, but my "lost" order was quickly replaced by Ascent upon proof that I had laid a complaint with the courier firm.

327313 2005-02-22 04:45:00 Another good shop is Paradigm PCs (http://www.pp.co.nz/). I ordered quite a bit for my (then) new system from them and got great service. They answered my questions via email promptly, and everything was delivered quickly and was well packaged. Jen (38)
327314 2005-02-22 05:51:00 Yep Ascent are damn good, if the Dunedin Couriers are on the ball.
pp.co.nz is who I use when Ascent is just too expensive.

Tastech also seem ok.

327316 2005-02-22 07:04:00 Totaltech, Nodes Technology, NovaPCpower, Paradigm PCs, Ascent, BlankCD.co.nz and StylesPC have all give me exceptional service over the years. E|im (87)
327317 2005-02-22 07:16:00 Thanks everyone. I'll have a look at those shops.

You might also want to check PBTech in Penrose Auckland or Hamilton. I have used both places and they both seem to know what they are doing. I normally use the Hamilton shop.
