327226 2005-02-21 23:54:00 I have been looking on the web 'til I am blue in the face, make head 'n tail out of LCD reviews. Most reviews are based in the US and well in advance to their release here in NZ.

A short while ago I shortlisted the Samsung 193P based on what I had read. It was a good monitor. Then I read later, that is has some ghosting when playing games. I play RTS as opposed to FPS (or driving games). Would this be an issue for the 193P. It does have 20ms response time.

Recently I have shortlisted the BENQ FP937S+ (8ms and 8-bit color), however, this is not in NZ yet and may not be, but a review on THG recently says it is good, but not excellent. The editors choice was not available in NZ.

The problem is, BENQ quality is not at the same level as Samsung.

Which would you choose if the price was the same? BENQ FP937S+ (TN screen) or Samsung 193P (MVA screen) for RTS gaming.

327227 2005-02-22 01:38:00 I would go for Samsung, cause I know them. I have a 17" Samsung (I think the response time is 20 or 25 and it's fine for RTS).

You're getting a digital monitor?

327228 2005-02-22 01:59:00 Yes, both have DVI and the samsung is 20ms KiwiTT_NZ (233)
327229 2005-02-22 02:11:00 I purchased a Samsung 193P a few months ago. I wanted it more for the excellent colour/contrast than games/movies. I don't play games on it but I haven't had any ghosting apparent in movies, even fast moving scenes.

It is a great monitor but make sure you use it with DVI and have a good video card as I've heard this can make quite a difference with games such as Halo. Also I have an Nvidea card and it has really good monitor setup options for colour/contrast/gamma etc and added options for gaming synchronisation which makes quite a difference.

327230 2005-02-22 02:21:00 It was your comments here that caused me re-evaluate the 193P in lght of what I do. RTS and Web browsing. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
327231 2005-02-22 04:00:00 When I purchased my Samsung I couldn't find any retail store that had one to look at as the agents said they were selling too fast to get stock out, so I relied on the reviews on the net . . . mainly ones around for the 173p as they are basicly the same, just bigger screen on 193p .

There's a review here www . pcextreme . net/samsung173p . php
that gives a bit on gaming .

I've never seen a Benq in action, but we have a range of LCDs in our offices . . . el cheepos to 'reasonable' new Philips models and none of them comes close to the Samsung for 'true' colour/viewing angles etc .

I'd say that if you can afford the 173p you won't regret it, there is nothing about it I don't like .

327232 2005-02-22 05:04:00 Seriously pfft to the Samsung . It's a no brainer . ;) Compare the specs, the BenQ owns it hands down .

Ascent have it listed on their site so I assume it will be in NZ soon . Thinking of getting one for myself .

Samsung Syncmaster 193P
Contrast Ratio (Typical): 800:1
Response time (Typical): 20 ms
Brightness (Typical): 250cd/m2
8bit colour?
Interface VGA

BenQ FP937s+
Contrast Ratio (Typical): 700:1
Response time (Typical): 8ms
Brightness (Typical): 300 cd/㎡
Display Colours: 16 . 7 million (8bit colour)
Interface D-Sub and DVI

Basically the BenQ has got a slightly lower contrast ratio but that won't make too much difference if it is an 8bit panel and 700:1 it is still excellent considering last years high end 12ms models only went up to 500:1 .

8ms response time stomps 20ms . 20ms would be a dog for gaming, and DVD watching - you want like 12ms minimum . The BenQ also has better brightness and has DVI so has maximum picture quality becuase there is no quality loss with conversions to analogue (VGA) that you would get with the Samsung .

Check the price difference too . The 193P is going for like $1300 and the BenQ for about $970 .

327233 2005-02-22 07:09:00 These two website claim the contrast ratio is 1000:1

An add-on to my earlier post. Just checked my monitor (Syncmaster 710T)and it's actually 12ms. Was my previous monitor that was 20 or 25ms.

I think if you are gonna spend that much money, go for 12ms.

327234 2005-02-22 07:42:00 BenQ FP937s+
Contrast Ratio (Typical): 700:1
Response time (Typical): 8ms
Brightness (Typical): 300 cd/㎡
Display Colours: 16.7 million (8bit colour)
Interface D-Sub and DVI

Where did you get those specs from? Ascent (www.ascent.co.nz) lists it as Contrast Ratio of 450:1, Brightness of 250 cd/m2 and NO DVI interface for the BenQ.

And you shouldn't trust the specs stated by the manufacturers as they usually only state the minimum response time (as required by the ISO standard), not the Tr + Tf (time to rise + time to fall). You may find that the Samsung and BenQ are not as far apart as the specs would have you believe. Reviews are one of the best ways to truly know how an LCD monitor performs (or looking at them in a shop).

Also don't forget warranty policies for dead/bright pixels, etc.

Click on 'Manufacturer's specification' and then 'specification' at the BenQ site.

It is DVD-D because I emailed them. Email BenQ support and ask if it is 8ms rise and fall time. I'd wager a guess it is because I've seen 8ms grey to grey response times on monitors such as this (www.auo.com).

Pixel policy for the BenQ is here (PDF) (www.benq.com.au). If you get a stuffed one on arrival just kick up a fuss saying you're not paying for a faulty product and get a replacement.
