2005-02-21 04:55:00 | First of the setup:- (You may just skip to the "The Problem") I had a Compaq Presario 5011cl that's motherboard ed and needed to be replaced. I bought a new motherboard, compleetely compatible. Built new pc with 2 hard drives, dvd-rom, cd/cdrw-rom. And so one. First I put everything together and connected everything correctly (no problems there). One hard drive has win 98se and the other xp. After hours with messing with the new cmos and bios drives/settings I was capalbe of starting up the xp drive. When I started the comp up, all files were there but I got the buggy "must register xp" window (the one you get when you first install xp). After all this work I find out that my lan card does not have the drivers installed which I cant do since I cant reach the desktop so i call and and get the registration/ # thingy. I get to my desktop and try to intall drivers for my lan card but realize the drivers are already there but for some reason i can not connect to the internet. I do the connection wizard and restart the comp (because it asks) and when the comp starts back up it shows the buggy "register xp" or whatnot thingy again, i call in again but get aggitated so I enter all the #'s at once and somehow reach customer service (Which I did not even realize they had warm bodies at microsoft corps). Since I used the same xp disk to reformat 3 comps at my house (even though they were origonally installed seperately at the shop) the guy tells my I need to buy a new lisence but I really did not feel that enthusuastic. The Problem Trying to shorten up the story, some how the xp drive fails (cant read drive error) and i try to use the 98se drive as a second resort. I then realize that none of my cd drives have designate drives (f:, e:, ect) and that I can only start up in safemode for a short time before my comp crashes. I read many forums on the internet, fix all the errors I can, but when i try to start up w/o safemode it just crashes in the win98se loading screen, and i can not do anything in safemode that is of use becuase i do not have a cd-rom drive to download drives for any elleged currupted file, or messed up drive. I dont know if I should just shoot the darn thing, but any advice is well welcome.

2005-02-21 05:06:00 | Already tried. The main problem that I think I have is that I still have the old compaq files/drivers/programs. Of course I could probally format, but thats not going to help me if I dont have a cd-rom to load the new OS. | ScopesOfKilling (7390) | |
2005-02-21 05:25:00 | I would say, if the mobo isnt the same as the original, thats why its asking u to activate it. Thats usually the case, if u change the mobo. The other things (LAN) MIGHT work, if u delete all entries for the devices that arent working, and reboot. See if XP detects the right devices. Cant do much else, besides a repair of XP (but u cant ) since u have no cd. Theres not much else u can do without a cd for either 98 or XP.

2005-02-21 07:01:00 | when ever you do a motherboard swap its best if you format and reinstall otherwise you get get the headache you have now. if the pc didn't come with its own cd (ie had a restore partition) you will also need a new OS cd and lisence

2005-02-21 08:38:00 | hmmmm.......Borrow a OS cd from someone, do a dirty install, use the cd key that is attached to your box. Works a charm though does require a call to MS who generate a new installl id so that the CD key will work in the new install. All perfectly legit.
