327135 2005-03-03 07:50:00 thanks Jen, now im just waiting for the download, i might just find something else to do for the rest of the evening...... Prescott (11)
327136 2005-03-08 06:42:00 Once it is downloaded, open up a root console window in the directory you saved it.

Then issue this command:
rpm -Uvh kern[hit tab here to autocomplete the file name]

That should be it.

ok i have finally finished downloading the kernel sources ( i got a bit side tracked
after entering
rpm -Uvh kern[hit tab here to autocomplete the file name]

i get this:

error: kernel-source-2.6.8.1-7.i686.rpm : : MD5 digest: Bad expected (3a8391f568143b989c250ef12b3e5009) != (d8f396949f08d4e4d80c941898227a86)
error: kernel-source-2.6.8.1-7.i686.rpm cannot be installed

this is under root, i also tried it in my day-to-day account aswell

whats next?
thanks for all the help so far :)

327137 2005-03-08 06:48:00 Hate to break the news to you Prescott, but that error messages indicates a corrupt file. It must of been corrupted during the download. You will need to re-download the RPM again. Jen (38)

327139 2005-03-09 05:11:00 hhmmm it doesnt seem to get better, when i first downloaded the source (using freshdownload) it must of been a dud, so i tried with a different download manager, this time leechget and it gave me the same result.

im going to try FF internal download manager tonight, hopefully that will work

327140 2005-04-15 06:42:00 well over a month later and i stil am now further. ive given up. i downloaded the source like 5 times and then thought it was just me, so i had a mate download it for me in one go (he has jetstream) and i still cant get it to go so im scrapping this idea :(
same error i think it was

im thinking of trying a different distro.... maybe gentoo with the gentoo installer because im going to do a reformat in the next few days and i want to try something else. if i choose a different distro, are the kernal versions newer and improved, and i might then be able to get it going?

thank you soo much for the help, its greatly appreciated :)

327141 2005-04-15 07:03:00 The kernel version has nothing to do with it. Yoper had a recent kernel anyway. Your problem was not having the kernel source installed, and then only being able to download what looks like a corrupt package from that server.

I don't think installing Gentoo will benefit you, as this tends to be a distro that requires a bit more Linux know-how for starters and would be a killer on dialup to maintain. Try a distro that is designed for destkop users, but comes with the kernel source on the CD's already to save you downloading them. DSE has Fedora, Mandrake plus a few others on CD for less than $10. I would give one of those a try first, I know Fedora has the kernel source on CD4 but I'm not sure whether Mandrake does.

Or even better, get yourself a good external serial 56K modem (even if 2nd-hand). Dynalinks are good. That way you can use what distro you like and it should be supported natively.

327142 2005-04-15 07:52:00 very true Jen, oh well ill try some distro another day, no point in really buying another modem just to try linux, if i want to use linux ill just use my live cd that i have lying around.

i just had a little play around before and managed to get the source installed, it seemed like the corrupted version was still on my hard drive  i then tried to install it, after the "make install" command it said "unknown distribution.no boot scripts installed"

thanks for the help
