327246 2005-02-23 22:00:00 I have a 17" CRT and it takes over 2/3 of my small desk. A 21" CRT, I will have no room for my keyboard. Hence the move to LCD and I get 1280x1024. If I do that on my 17" E70f I only get it @ 60hz. This flickers too much for me.

I also have a work laptop with 1400x1050, so am used to LCDs for daily use.

327247 2005-02-23 22:42:00 There are many in the same situation as yourself, and if you need an LCD display then of course you must do what you need to. I wasn't aware, from your original post, that space was a critical factor for you, or I would not have suggested the CRT at all.

As an aside to this topic, to match the refresh performance of a CRT running at 85Hz, your LCD should boast a pixel refresh of ~11ms. That would effectively avoid the ghosting issues common to most LCDs currently out there. Newer LCD displays are noticably improved in that respect.

Good luck with your purchase, and keep us posted with your experience with the new monitor.

Cheers.

327248 2005-02-24 00:25:00 Of course with a 21" CRT the radiation would make you a 'microwaved chicken' pretty quick... or maybe that's not an incentive to change to LCD!

I disagree with the comment about colour reproduction of a CRT versis LCD... the good LCDs now have excellent colour repro and you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference from a CRT... guess that's part of paying for a 'premium' screen. Buy cheap and get crap.

Good luck with the BenQ, hope it does the job for you

With respect, as a graphics pro with access to various CRT and LCD brands and models, your comment "you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference from a CRT" doesn't stand up. It's quite possible that your colour perception is not a acute as my own, but I have yet to see a high-end LCD that is equal to a high-end CRT.

As to cheap = crap, that must of course be relative. While $800 may not buy you a very good LCD display, it will most certainly buy you a very good CRT.

When LCDs get to be as good as CRTs, I will convert. Until then, I will continue to be microwaved by my 21" LaCie, or my Sony G500. (I might even continue to use my cellphone).

327250 2005-02-24 03:34:00 Sorry, I don't mean to sound rude, but I can almost guarantee that my colour perception is better than yours as my profession relies on it with far more 'nuances' that a computer graphics pro requires.

I am continually amazed by so called professionals who bag LCDs for that reason and I'm beginning to think that it's a snobbery sort of thing like graphics 'pros' only use Macs.

In fact a friend of mine is a professional graphic artist and he was pretty impressed with the Samsung LCD.

Yes, I agree there will be nothing to gain from further "discussion". So a draw it is then. Who exactly keeps the score on this forum? Is there a "keeper of the points" or does one have to remember who sparred with whom onesself? :)

On to my next joust. Thanks for the wise counsel. ;)

I guess you keep score yourself. Though I keep an eye on Ninja's and Metla's scores for entertainment. I think its something like Ninja & Metla: 20, Billy T: 0.
