327390 2005-02-22 08:30:00 Greetings.
In my folder C:\Documents and settings\anon\local settinmgs\temp I have 2 files called NCT 172 and NCT 176. Each is 745 MB and I am predictably keen to delete them. I have learnt from past experiences that deleting things can be problematic.
I am using Win 2k

Can anyone tell me what these might be and whether deleting them will not result in lots of bad things happening?

327391 2005-02-22 08:47:00 I figure that if it's in the TEMP folder then it can be deleted. If it is needed or currently in use you'll get an Access Denied error. You could try restarting your PC first and then deleting them. The TEMP folder is exactly that - temporary storage for files. They're supposed to be deleted when no longer needed, but Windows doesn't seem to handle that very well.

Do note though, sometimes people accidentally download files to the TEMP folder, so check that they're not things you've recently download.

327392 2005-02-22 09:01:00 I am using Win2KPro and I keep a close eye on my temp files. I have never had files with the designations you have given. Suppose you could try to open them and see what they are. I use WordPad to do this when I am not sure what they are. The files you have are VERY large. The other thing I do is to WinZip and burn to CD in case they turn out to be needed by some program that is only used occassionally. zqwerty (97)

327394 2005-02-22 09:27:00 Short answer is no, but in the early days of my computing experience, I found a 6Meg .exe that I did not know what it was so I zipped it and it turned out to be the MsN Messenger backup which is used to repair the program if anything goes wrong. Also I have found books that I have d/led in the temp files months later, when I was a nOOb and wondered where they had gone to. Better be safe than sorry. zqwerty (97)
