327143 2005-02-21 08:35:00 I've decided to install my own adsl splitter (differing from a filter) instead of paying a technician. Im installing a splitter because we have sky digital and 6 phones. I've had experience with telephone wiring, can source the splitter and necessary conectors and easily access the main phoneline as it enters the house.
I went to have a look at how my friends one was wired up and for some reason (conspiracy?) they had used odd shaped screws so we couldent get in to the box, or be bothered buying a odd shaped screw driver set.

So now my question is with a 3 wire telephone system how is it set up?. Ive found the adsl splitter picture here (only telecom approved splitter) www.marque-magnetics.co.nz
It appears to have 3 wires coming out of it, orange blue white.

I have a three wire system which is wired as follows

3 Blue 4
2 White 5 Red
1 6

-So when I cut the main wire what do i connect each colour to? and what does each colour on the splitter connect to?

-Is the jack that you install for the dedicated connection a 2wireBT jack even if you have a three wire system?.

I realise this is slightly hard to explain, I'd really appreciate a simple diagram, text based is fine?.

You help would be much appreciated, particulalry if you have a 3wire system and have had a splitter installed by a technician.

327144 2005-02-21 09:02:00 If it is one of the Telecom splitters,it will have 2 wires out of each end,a blue and white, and an orange and white. The orange and white go to the line coming in and the wire going away to the adsl jack. The blue/white goes to all the other phones/alarm,etc in the house. This way only the one jack where the router is plugged in will get the adsl signal. You should really also upgrade all the jacks to 2 wire jacks,as the third wire can cause an imbalance and problems with the dsl

327145 2005-02-21 10:36:00 I've heard there's a limitation to the number of phone connections etc that a splitter can handle - 5 or something? Might pay to check that out. Greg (193)
327146 2005-02-22 06:51:00 I'm going to change to a 2 wire system.
Thanks for the installation advice peter, I'm still a little confused though. I'm gona cut my phone line and attach the blue and white wires (on the splitter) to the two wires on the house end of the cut cable. Then from what i could gather attach the orange one to the line in (presumably the "line in" wire of the two) and the white wire goes to the adsl jack. I may have picked that up wrong but what i cant work out is if I attach the line in wire to the orange wire, what do I connect the line out wire which is now severed where it eneters the house to (like the line in, except its connected to the orange). and also if the white wire goes to the jack what does the other wire coming away from the jack connect to?
If its possible to add attachments to a pm I could send you a graphic representation of my understanding. Its hard to write this sort of thing down.

327147 2005-02-22 07:28:00 ohh i might have got it now. Does the white and orange go to the adsl jack and the blue and white just conect with the phoneline in a t-Juction sort of way. Is white negative (line out)?

327148 2005-02-22 07:32:00 Greg - it's filters that have a limit of 5.

Hersh - you are confusing yourself! The 2 line in wires go to the ADSL jack and to the orange and white of the splitter. The splitter input bridges the jack, it's not in series. The blue and white outputs of the splitter are joined to the 2 wires going off to the rest of the wiring

327149 2005-02-22 07:35:00 ohh i just really need a diagram, if anyone can e-mail me something, pm me for my e-mail address Hersh (7042)
327150 2005-02-22 07:43:00 ohh i might have got it now. Does the white and orange go to the adsl jack and the blue and white just conect with the phoneline in a t-Juction sort of way. Is white negative (line out)?

Take wires from street to ADSL jack side of splitter

327151 2005-02-22 08:13:00 Hi Hersh

Just remember that there must be nothing between your incoming line pair and the ADSL outlet, it is a straight-through feed.

The ADSL splitter feeds the phone line and in fact, apart from its location, it is no different to a filter. You can use a DSE filter as a splitter if you want to.

The splitter usually goes close to the point of entry of the phone line, or at least, ahead of any line splits for telephone extensions.

The phone lines must pass through the splitter/filter to isolate the low impedance telephones from the line to the ADSL outlet so as to preserve the amplitude of the high frequency ADSL signal. It is as simple as that.

Actually, there is no need for splitters or filters on a dedicated ADSL line, and if you unplugged all your phones, you wouldn't need a splitter or filter either. That would make for a quiet life, but a lonely one.

Cheers

327152 2005-02-22 09:13:00 so to summarise

-Incoming line comes in, goes to adsl jack and splitter (seperatly). At the otherside of the splitter is the phones.
-blue/white wires on phone side
-orange/white wires on incoming line side
-which ones white and which ones coloured dosent matter.

......................incoming line
splitter ____________|_______________adsl jack

adsl goes out, phones protected.
