327722 2005-02-23 23:47:00 My annual subscription for Norton Antivirus 2002 is about to expire. I can update the subscription for NZ$60.10 or download an upgrade to NAV2005 for US$40 (NZ$53). Seems a bit of a no-brainer. However NAV has the reputation of being a hog of system resources. I’m running XP on a 1.8GHz P4.

Has anyone in a similar position made the upgrade and found that overall performance suffered?

Thanks,
Martin

PS – Please don’t mention AVG!!! :xmouth:

327723 2005-02-23 23:53:00 What are your system specs?-Edit, I see you listed your specs anyhow. It should still work well enough even pulling the anchor known as Nortons.

and yes, it kneecaps some machines (older ones) drasticly, and has a noticible effect on all machines, but then so does 2002 to a lesser effect.

If your only options though are 2002 or 2005, take 2005 and live with the performance hit (most people don't know their computers run like crap until they get em serviced or use someone eses anyhow) 2002 engine is out of date.

And i would recomend a complete install of 2005,and I would do a format first, Due to reasons I won't go into to do with Nortons being utter utter crap.

327726 2005-02-24 07:17:00 Hello MM,

You should certainly run the 2005 version, especially if using XP.

You should certainly not reformat (unless your PC has problems) but you should completely remove Norton 2002 before installing 2005, this is best done by running the RNAV2003.exe removal tool, especially written by symantec to make easy the complete removal of Norton 2003 and earlier versions, this tool completely removes all traces of Norton from the registry,
However it does leave the symantec shared folders which you could remove manually if you wish.

RNAV2003 available from this link service1.symantec.com

Hello Metla,

I'm glad I was able to give you an early morning laugh.

I don't think it would have been as loud or long as the one I had when reading your advice to format a PC that apparently has no problems other than the owner needing advice on upgrading software or not.

This sort of advice is normally the realm of the bewitched, bothered or bewildered and not computer technicians unless they are deliberately being mischevious and wanting to cause headaches for the unintiated.

327730 2005-02-25 03:53:00 Nod32 is the best in the world, and does not bog the system down, even when doing a clean. Rob99 (151)
327731 2005-02-25 03:56:00 NaV 2005 is no more a resource hog than other AV programs.
I have been using it for about six months and would not consider changing it.
Beware of these freeware AV programs.
