327515 2005-02-23 02:23:00 Hi guys...

My mate just moved into a flat and we wanna know how much power the computer uses compared to, say.... a TV... a lightbulb... a fridge?

Any Ideas...

If needed the specs are 300W PSU, and 17" CRT... plus xp3000, 1 hdd, mx4000 gfx...

I heard somewhere that the psu uses less than a tv, and the screen less that that but am unsure how correct that is....

Cheers,
Hamstar

327516 2005-02-23 02:51:00 We can leave 2 P4's on 12 hrs a day . And 2 monitors on for the same amount of time . This system has a SATA and IDE hdd, cd and dvd burner .
scanner, tv tuner, firewire card, and cam connected . And a card reader .

The other just 1 hdd . cd and dvd burner too . Both 400W .

About 80-90 a mth, with a TV going at night . And stereo for a few hrs in the daytime . And drier and fridge . For about 1/2 hr to an hr a day . (the drier sometimes) .

This stupid stove with heavy elements the landlord got, would waste more power than anything else . We try to use avoid it as much as we can!

327517 2005-02-23 03:41:00 Hi Hamstar

We did this in some detail last year, right down to the energy costs, if you can track down the thread, but for a quick n' dirty answer, while everything is up and running you might use about 250 to 300 watts. With the monitor off that would drop by anything between 75 and 125 watts, depending on how efficient the monitor is.

Two computers, one monitor and a few miscellaneous bits and pieces are enough to keep my small office comfortable in winter except on very cold days. I estimate I have about 500 watts of heat generated.

Cheers
