327810 2005-02-24 23:53:00 if you are going to spend that much on the ATI card, you may aswell go for a 6800GT, its got 16 pipelines, and 256Bit. Jams (1051)
327811 2005-02-25 01:27:00 Yes true but the 6800GT has a known video flaw which cannot be repaired so I'm staying away from the 6800GT. To be perfectly honest I was a nVidia fan for years but I must admit that I like ATi's products and I don't really want to change the video platform. Only reason I was considering the 6600GT was cos it was cheaper.

327812 2005-02-25 01:40:00 oh right, havent head about that.

im picking up a 6600GT tomorrow, and have read the reviews. and its damn good performance for money.

i agree with what Metla ses, the difference in price is too great compared to the little perfomance gap.

327813 2005-02-25 02:33:00 A colleague has the 6600 GT and is rapped.

I am looking at the X800 XT VIVO as an option as well. But may simply go for the standard XT, as I don't think I will do much video editing.

The difference becomes apparent at high resolutions and higher AA and AF. Really who wants to run something like Half Life 2 with no fancy stuff? The x800 should last you longer and work for newer games still quite well.

It will only be AGP though. If you were planning a full system upgrade in a year or something, a cheaper card would be better now and a high end PCI-E one later? Though IMO your current system is quite nice.

Ooh ahh (firmware.orcon.net.nz). 1280x1024 (6xAA, 16AF) and extremely playable, no hiccups.

327815 2005-02-25 02:48:00 37 fps with nothing on the screen?

Hmmmmm.

Personally I wouldn't accept that for a second.

What video flaw is this? I'm using a 6800GT and have no problems whatsoever with it.

Only seems to happen when you are intently staring at that much water watching it while it's rippling. Like you can drive along in the water and it'll be doing well over the refresh rate of the monitor, mine will hover around 75 FPS with vsync on. With vsync off it'll be well over 100 in most parts. Try yours in the same place, find some water to look at. It will probably drop to 10 FPS or something. Remember 30 FPS is playable. If it drops below that you'll notice it. ;)

And the NV40 video decoder flaw is well documented, search on google.

327818 2005-02-25 09:14:00 Yeah, I've beem meaning to fire up the game and find a similar location, How did you bring up the fps counter?

I'll just use Fraps i think.

Oh,The human eye is easily trained to distinguish much higher framerates, 80fps is a sweetspot....well for me at least, 30-40 would be hard to take.

Have a read here (www.pressf1.co.nz) for more info.

The flaw doesn't "appear" to affect performance but I am not one to buy a product with a known flaw, even if it doesn't "appear" to affect the performance of the card. What exactly is this supposed to mean to a consumer... "it doesn't appear to affect performance." It sounds all too relative... do they actually mean that it doesn't affect performance if you don't do this or don't do that with the card???
