2005-02-24 03:49:00 | Hey guys, after months of saving pondering and searching I have finally decided to get a new graphics board. I'm into games and video capturing and I want a little bit more bang than what my current 9600XT offers My final 2 choices are: nVidia 6600GT 128MB (tw.giga-byte.com) $333.00 + GST AND ATi Radeon X800 XT VIVO 256MB (tw.giga-byte.com) $738.00 + GST I can afford both but if I'm going to get the same performance from the lower priced card then that would suit me fine... I can use the extra money to buy a 17 inch LCD monitor. I'm not to worried bout the whole VIVO offering from the XT as I have a TV card which fulfills my video capture needs quite nicely. Essentially it boils down to... is it really necessary to go whole hog on the X800 XT or will I get the same performance (even if negligible) from the 6600GT. Honestly I can't make up my mind. Hope that all makes sense and please try and keep your replies friendly and civil. cheers chiefnz

2005-02-24 04:36:00 | i can see that the radeon card is alot more expensive that the nVidia card, is it possible to get a x800 with out the VIVO? | Prescott (11) | |
2005-02-24 04:42:00 | I would definitely go for the 6600 gt. They have gotten some really good reviews and my one works great after I got a new PSU. | ad_267 (6193) | |
2005-02-24 04:45:00 | Get the X800XT, it beats the 6600GT in every benchmark. The 6600GT is a midrange card, while the X800XT is geared towards the high end. | Zygar (29) | |
2005-02-24 08:01:00 | I would go for the higher end card. It should last you a lot longer and it's just faster for games ie it stomps on the 6600GTs. FYI I have one similiar. You could also hunt around for the X800 Pro Vivos, not XT vivos. They should be a bit cheaper and in all the forums around there is like 99% success rate with the soft mod. There's only a few retards who can't follow instructions. Basically the x800 Pro Vivos have an XT core in them and RAM capable of 1200Mhz. You can get the full 16 pipelines enabled and stable XT PE speeds. Look for models with GC16 RAM, not GC20 because there are a few duds around like the powercolors.

2005-02-24 08:47:00 | Yeah thanks guys, E|im I was also looking at this X800 Pro (tw.giga-byte.com) ($666.00 + GST ) but I wasn't sure about the soft-mod and how well it would perform. The Non VIVO Pro version uses 12 pipelines I believe, but I wasn't sure whether there was a soft mod for it. I'll see if I can find a X800 Pro with VIVO otherwise it would have to be the X800 Pro without VIVO then if I can soft mod it. I can just use my TV card for the video capturing. Thanks for your input guys. cheers chiefnz

2005-02-24 09:31:00 | Nah the X800 Pro non Vivo won't softmod, it's only got a standard x800 pro core and GC20 memory. I think there is like less than 25% success with the hardmod, but no way would I be hardmodding an expensive card like that. It involves using conductive paint and knife etc. See if you can find some x800 pro vivos in stock. If you like Doom3 more than Half Life 2 you could go for a 6800GT for slightly more FPS, but I think the Ati cards are much better.

2005-02-24 12:19:00 | meh. 6600gt hangs with the xt untill AA and af are bought into the equation. Do the math,$400 difference for 25 fps under certain conditions,
