327637 2005-02-23 15:40:00 I swear, I may quick installing software . . .

I have never used Quickbooks before and just installed pro version 2005 . When I try to start the software, it gives me an error that says Win XP & 2000 users must have power users or admin group rights in order to run Quickbooks .

HUH?

Okay, I'm not up to speed on all of the changes Microsoft has made to security features to "protect me" nor do I know how to change them .
Anyone know what I should do so I can use this software .
No, I'm not on a network . Just little ole me at home .

327638 2005-02-23 19:56:00 Is it a windows error or a quickbooks error?
If it's a windows error you may have to be logged on through an adminstrator account.
Having said that, you would have needed to have be logged on to an admin account to install it in the first place.
When setting up quickbooks you must designate an administrator (with a password, optional)
From there you can add users & grant then certain rights.

I think this will be a windows problem rather than a quickbooks one.
Does your account have administrator rights?
If not, log in to an admin a/c & try quickbooks from there
If you do have admin rights I would say your a/c may be corrupt
If there are no other accounts with admin rights boot to safe mode, logon as administrator & create another admin account with a different name
Restart, logon to the new a/c & try quickbooks again

You must have set the login you are using to be a limited one. Easiest way is to go to the control panel and select Users and from there select your account. Select change account type and select either admin or power user.

Of course you are going to need to be logged in as an admin in this case to do the change.

327641 2005-03-16 21:28:00 OK, Intuit's programmers are just plain out of their minds . They want you to give all Quickbooks users Power Users or Admin rights . I don't have enough room to explain how BAD of an idea that is, so I'll just post the solution .

I have created a security template, that when imported will correct the problem . It can be imported using "Security Configuration and Analysis" or pushed out to a domain as a GPO (Group Policy) . Simply download the file below, extract the template from the zip file and import it using one of the two methods listed above, SCaA being the easiest for a small number of computers . If you're sceptical, read through the file before importing it!

327642 2005-03-18 16:49:00 Ok, so I finally got quickbooks to fess up on this one . They know there is a bug, yet it took me a couple of calls to get someone who knew how to fix it .
They emailed me this fix for Windows XP (and they outright told me that it wasn't in their support docs online, you have to get the problem diagnosed by them first for them to send you the email) . Needless to say, I'm a bit disgusted with them right now .
Anyway, hope this helps some of you out there .

Problem Description:
When trying to open QuickBooks, why do I recieve this message?

"Windows XP and Windows 2000 users must have Power Users or Administrator group rights in order to run QuickBooks . Please contact your system administrator about being granted those rights . "
Possible Cause:
The system registry permissions are not set up properly in QuickBooks, preventing QuickBooks 2005 from starting after installation . .

Solution:
There is a tool available that will locate the missing permissions in QuickBooks' Registry Keys and try to set the correct permissions .

Follow these steps to use to use the tool:

Download QB2005_RACLFix_Rel . exe(available at ftp://ftp . quicken . com/pub/quickbooks/2005/RACLFix/QB2005_RACLFix_Rel . exe), and then click Save in the File Download window .

Select Desktop for the Save in: drop-down list, and then click the Save .

Go to the desktop, and then double-click QB2005_RACLFix_Rel . exe icon .

Click Begin in the QuickBooks 2005 Registry Access Rights Repair tool window . .

Important: In the Choose your Edition of QuickBooks window, select the version of QuickBooks you are want to open from the drop-down list, and then click Next .

For example: If QuickBooks Accountant is the version installed on the computer, select QuickBooks Premier: Accountant Edition .

In the Check Registry for Access Rights window, click Check .

When the message, "Registry issues have been located and fixed . ", appears, click Next .

Verify that the correct License and Product numbers appear in the Verification of License Number and Product Number window . These should match the numbers that appear on the yellow tag that came with your QuickBooks CD-ROM .

If the numbers are correct, click Next . If they are incorrect, enter the correct numbers, and then click Next . If you receive a message to reinstall QuickBooks, do so .

Click OK to the message, "The tool has completed all necessary checks . If the tool was able to fix the issues, QuickBooks should be ready for use . If the tool reported that the issues could not be fixed, please contact Tech Support . " .
QuickBooks should now open without any problems .

Note: If QuickBooks does not open after following these steps, report this to Intuit . Make sure to report any errors you received while running the tool .

327644 2006-01-30 17:12:00 I'm so glad you posted this problem and also followed up by giving the instructions on what they did to fix you problem by sending you the executable file to download .

I purchased the Quickbooks Pro 2006 and had the very same problem opening the application while using my Windows XP Home Edition . "Windows XP and Windows 2000 users must have power users or Administrator group rights in order to run Quickbooks" . Since I have the home edition we don't have the option to create any groups at all .

After a long time on the phone with my english as a second language customer service helper (time spent is actually figured exponentially when dealing with ESL people), I finally realized it was going nowhere and mentioned to her your post I had read about needing a file that fixes the registry problem . I gave her the file name that you had used QB2005_RACLFix_Rel . exe and she was able to pull the 2006 version of the fix .

So for all you folks who may need to know this, here's the email I received and perhaps you can avoid the 30 minutes on the phone conversing with an ESL tech support person:

We now have a fix for this error . Before following any of the steps to fix this issue you should make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date and your system is virus free . Please go to this link . quickbase . com/db/baqyzpyqv?act=dbpage^pagename=QB2006Dwnld . html" target="_blank">www . quickbase . com
for the tool and directions on how to use it .

I downloaded the executable file QB2006_RACLFix . exe and it worked like a charm . Good luck to all you Quickbook 2006 users!
