328135 2005-02-25 10:03:00 Hello there,
Recently I installed SP2 on my brand new Dell Windows Xp machine. It is powered by P4 3.0GHz with HT and 512 MB DDR RAM. After installing, I noticed there is a significant increase of time needed to boot up and shut down (around 10 seconds ++). I installed a RAM usage monitor (FreeRAM Xp Pro)and it never go down less than 100MB.Thus I uninstalled SP2 and now revert back to SP1 because my dad complains the computer needs a long time to startup. Any help would be great!

328136 2005-02-25 10:11:00 Is the CPU a Prescott CPU??

Does it do anything else BUT go slow?? Like not respond / hangs??

I dont think this support.microsoft.com is the prob tho, unless your system hangs as it says on this url.

Try doing a defrag. Or scan for spyware. I wld check for spyware before or if u decide to reinstall SP2.

328137 2005-02-25 10:41:00 It is Pentium 4 based machine. Nope, my computer did not hang or stop responding during, after installation and under normal usage after installing Sp2, my computer never hang once before. I heard that window's based defragment does not really improve your computer? Only products like Disckeeper that will really do the job. Renmoo (66)
328138 2005-02-25 10:45:00 Well defraggers doesnt matter what it is they do the same thing. Altho some maybe slower than others.

Try defragging in safe mode. See if it makes any difference. And use Spybot or adaware 1.05 se to scan for spyware.

328139 2005-02-25 10:46:00 Reset his alarm clock back 10 seconds.

Turn off the on and off sounds.

328140 2005-02-25 10:52:00 Is there any other solutions other than you mentioned above like Spyware and Adware scanning as well as defragment? I will probably do the steps you mentioned tomorrow morning. Renmoo (66)
328141 2005-02-25 10:55:00 Well spyware can slow things down, if u get a lot of it installed on your system.

Spybot

http://www.spybot.info or

Ad-aware

http://www.lavasoftusa.com the SE 1.05 version.

328143 2005-02-26 09:49:00 Well, I did what you mentioned above. I perform a full computer scan using Avast!, AVG 7 Free Edition, McAfee Stinger, Lavasoft Ad-aware, Spybot S & D. No viruses were found but only a couple of adwares. I also did a defragment on my only drive, C drive. Little do I know the next step I did nearly cause me a big trouble. I had changed a registry value few months ago which enables me to show other words instead of "start" at the bottom-left corner of the screen. (www.geocities.com). I set the Winlogon to load explorerpolygamy.exe instead the normal explorer.exe because I tweaked the value inside explorerpolygamy.exe to display words other than "start" After finish installing SP2, I rebooted the machine and found the Windows displaying an error regarding the Windows Explorer. Apparently Sp2 assumed that the right Windows Explorer to be used is explorer.exe, but the real one is supposed to be explorerpolygamy.exe As such, the monitor only displays out the desktop wallpaper and nothing else. The only way I can thought of is call up Task Manager and launch System Restore to restore back to the previous state before I installed SP2. Fortunately, nothing bad happened during the process of restoring, but additional 500MB or so is used. Or rather, wasted. :badpc: Renmoo (66)
328144 2005-02-26 11:43:00 I am not going to say did you try turning off the music.

I would back up your data

Slipstream SP2 and XP

Format and reinstall
